CATHEDRAL bells rang out over Blackburn today to honour the 100th birthday of one of the town's most famous sons - author Alfred Wainwright.
The author of popular guides for walking in the Lake District was given a full three-and-three-quarter hour peel at Blackburn Cathedral.
It was part of a day of celebrations for Mr Wainwright, who died in 1991.
Fans of his books, which have sold more than two million copies worldwide, also took part in a six-mile walk showcasing East Lancashire's glorious countryside.
Mr Wainwright will also be remembered with a dedicated service at Blackburn Cathedral on Sunday.
