MATT Jansen has been handed the chance by former club Blackburn Rovers to rebuild his injury-torn career - almost three years since playing his last competitive game.

The ex-Rovers favourite has resumed training at Ewood Park in a bid to have one last shot at extending a once-promising career that looked doomed to failure after a near-fatal motorbike crash in 2002.

Jansen was regarded as one of football’s bright young stars at the turn of this century when his sparkling Rovers form earned him an England call-up.

A stomach injury cost him his place at the 2002 World Cup, and that summer a crash in Italy saw him spend four days in a coma with serious head injuries, something he has never fully recovered from.

The former Carlisle and Crystal Palace man toiled away in the seasons after in the hope of redisovering his former glories but, after failed spells at Rovers, Coventry and Bolton, Jansen’s career looked over back in 2006.

Now back in training in Lancashire, the 31-year-old is making a final attempt to see if he has a future in the game, with his former Rovers employers more than happy to offer a helping hand.

Jansen has returned to Rovers on an informal basis in a “relaxed arrangement” with the club, but in an ideal scenario, the striker can refind the form that would make him a valuable asset to Paul Ince’s squad.

Rovers chairman John Williams though insisted there have been deadlines set, no deals agreed or no pressure put on the player, claiming Jansen’s return is a very casual thing aimed at helping a former Rovers favourite.

Williams said: “Matt is training at the club but it is a very casual arrangement. He wants to see if he is capable of making another go it and we are delighted to help him.”

Jansen started his career at Carlisle back in 1995, before signing for Crystal Palace three years later for £1million.

A starring role at Selhurst Park earned him his Premier League chance, in a £4.1m switch to Rovers at the start of 1999, and he made an immediate impact with a debut goal against Spurs.

Jansen cemented his place in Rovers’ fans hearts with some memorable performances to help them back into the top-flight in 2000/2001, finishing as the league’s second top scorer.

He continued in a similar vein the following season, scoring the opener in Rovers’ 2-1 League Cup final win over Tottenham, and earned his first international call-up for a clash with Paraguay in April 2002.

Injury ended his England dreams and, following his horrific motorcyle smash in the summer of 2002, Jansen’s career started to go backwards.

After visiting a sports psychologist in America to aid his recovery, Jansen signed a two-year pay as you play deal at Rovers in May 2005 but just a few months later he was released from his contract.

After a short spell at Bolton that included his last competitive game, a 1-0 defeat at Anfield in April 2006, Jansen’s career looked over after a failed trial in America with the New York Red Bulls.

Jansen has since been developing various business interests but, having never ruled out a return to the game, will be desperate to grab his ‘last chance’ with both hands.

I was talking to Matt at last weeks WBA game, were he was trying his hand on the “corporate entertaining circuit”. He was telling me that he is fully committed to get back playing the game that he loves. I am chuffed to bits that in this day and age were a lack of loyalty by both players and clubs seems to be a thing of the past, that the club he sees as his home is prepared to try and resurrect his career in the game. All the best Matt, we have missed such a natural talent down at Ewood and well done to all at BRFC for looking after one of its own.

What a wonderful story to wake up to. I must still be dreaming surely:) This and the story of Pingu with the stuffed penguin friend are indeed feel-good stories. More of these please, less of the violence and drugs!!

We love you Matt! It's such a great feeling to have you back home:)

Memories -
That promotion winner at Preston.
Ripping the Dingles to shreds in the 5-0. (thats four fingers and one thumb RAyzer!)
Scoring one and setting Andy Cole up for the other in the League Cup Final.
Always welcome at Ewood Matty.
What was his best goal? - The one against Dingles when he ran from the half-way line and slotted home?

I hope this 'fairytale story' can have a fairytale ending. It's not often a heartwarming story is recorded in the press. I really do hope he can make a comeback of sorts. If anyone deserves another shot its Matty... even if he did come down here with that other lot from down the 61!

Come on Morst, that aint fair. It's gonna take RAYzer at least until tomorrow to work out why he has a finger left over when he has followed your instruction.
Matt Jansen is probably in the top five players I have seen at Rovers. He had flair, pace, great in the air and could stick the ball away from anywhere. I really hope some good comes of this.
Best goal. Not too sure, maybe the one against Norwich the day after Uncle Jack passed away. For celebrations the equaliser away at Bolton when we were down to ten men. Any goal against the Dingles is remembered with fondness ( Tony Finnigan anyone?) Best memory of Matt has to be after the Preston promotion game, sat at a piano up Cav ( if you aren't of a certain age, ask your dad) singing Cheer up Stanley Ternant with the rest of the team joining in. Priceless.
Good luck Matt, I'm sure you have the love of every single Rovers fan behind you.

it is great news..i rated matt as a good footballer....but at 31,i think it might be a bit late..but it would be fantastic for us,and him to see him pull on a rovers shirt again and play at ewood park.He always struck me as a normal lad,who didnt need the glitz and glamour,he just wanted to play football....GOOD LUCK MATT ,lets see you in the blue and white half again.....

Rover The Hill - good shout that equaliser at Bolton.
Tony Finnigen? I can even remember "Terry Eccles" double in 1972 when relegated (and useless!)Rovers still beat top 6 Clarets side 2-0 but I can't remember TF's. I even went to most Manx Cup games vs Clarets - enlighten us RTH.

Not heard the cav story before!! Thought the team would have gone off to Bistro French or somewhere! Was Matty actually playing the thing? Cracking story!

p.s. - that was Rovers bottom of Div 2 in 1972 and relegated to Div 3 that year and Clarets top 6 Div 1 - yeah I know it's hard to believe but it was only a few years in our history!

Morst- Finnigan's was a 25yrd effort at Turd Moor. About the only thing he ever did for us.
Bluerover- Yes Matty was really playing the piano up Cav. I can recall him doing Miss American Pie brilliantly. Wow, I'm coming over all tearry-eyed thinking back. What a night.

Cheers RTH - Do you remember Finnigan away at West Brom in the 80's? He got the ball just outside West Brom area and dribbled past their entire team - only problem was he ended up passing back to Terry Gennoe! Rovers fans went mad as we were 2-1 down at the time although 1SG made it 2-2 late on. To be fair to TF he scored against Div 1 Shef Wed when we knocked them out of FA Cup.
Just remembered - what about Matty's debut goal under Kidd. Chest, Turn & volley from 25 yards? Kidd was the only person at Ewood who thought after that he should be on the bench or right wingand we went down!
Ah well - time to get the wine out and settle down to Sky. We have nothing to lose seen as the experts already have us beaten 3-0!

That was against Spuds at Ewood. As for Kidd, what a plum. Remember his "Rubber dinghy men" quote. With Dailly, Peacock, Davidson and Grayson as your backline, is it any wonder we went down?
I remembered the Finnigan incident, but couldn't recall who against.Come on you Blues

I'm sorry but even as a great fan of Matt's during his time at the Rovers sentimental nostalgia does not work. The Rovers are becoming a rest home for footballers that should retire and stay retired. Robbie Fowler being a prime example.

Sorry this is a late entry, but I just had to commentate on Tony Finnigan.
He would get in any Rovers fan's team of the worst ever players. He was ludicrously inept. Think we got him from Crystal Palace - another reason for hating them, apart from them cheating us out of promotion during Don Mackays days. I'm sure I read that he'd been banged up for something. Car theft? Anyone remember?
