Warnock hails Blackburn Rovers' 'golden oldie' Tugay

STEPHEN Warnock has hailed Rovers’ pass-master Tugay as ‘an inspiration’.

The former Liverpool defender has formed a formidable, if unlikely, midfield partnership with 38-year-old Tugay to steer Rovers to impressive wins over Everton and Newcastle.

Warnock admits he has always been an admirer of the cultured midfielder but reveals the last couple of games have only enhanced Tugay’s importance to the Lancashire outfit.

The ex-Galatasaray and Glasgow Rangers man looked in danger of beco-ming Rovers’ forgotten man after playing just one minute of their first four Premier League games.

But, an impressive cameo from the bench in the 1-0 home win over Fulham earned him his chance and he has not looked back since with starring roles in the last two victories.

With the likes of Vince Grella, Keith Andrews, Steven Reid and Aaron Mokoena all waiting in the wings, Ince faces some tough midfield decisions in the future but, for the moment, Warnock is just relishing learning from the ‘master’.

He said: “Tugay makes it very easy for you. I try and win the ball back, give it to Tugay and, as he showed again on Saturday, he creates things and is really fantastic.

“He is incredible. I always looked at him before he came to the club and thought what a fantastic player he is.

"I have been lucky enough to play with him for the past two games and he is even better when you play alongside him.

“Even though I have played at left back and he has been in the same team, you only realise how immense he is when you play next to him.”

Since arriving at Ewood Park in 2001 from Ibrox, Tugay has made more than 200 appearances and Warnock sees no reason why he can’t add a few more yet before calling it a day.

“Tugay is very fit,” he said. “People think he is not what he was a few years ago, I think people will realise that is not true after watching the last couple of games.

“I think he is immense. He will probably be the first to admit he will struggle to play three games in a week but he is fitter than he lets on. He is a fit boy.

“The way he talks and his calmness is fantastic. It sort of flows throughout the team. Players get a bit of that and he calms everyone down.”

Manager Ince was again wholesome in his praise of the midfield pairing at St James, having singled the duo out in midweek as well, but warns Tugay has to be handled with caution.

He said: “Tugay was outstanding again. At his age he should be tucked up indoors and watching TV.

“We have to be careful with him though. He was different class and I thought him and Steve Warnock worked well together.

“We also have other players in that position though and that shows the spirit and togetherness we have got here.”

Never ceases to amaze me, just glad Hughsey didn't get rid and Tugay didn't go off to another club in the summer. Treats Blackburn like a local lad who is playing for the team he supports. When he first signed he was in the club shop buying them out of merchandise for his kids and him, looked like a mad supporter. A joy to have in the team, well done Tugs!

Oh how I wish he was 15 years younger.I never thought I would see the Rovers win the top league in my lifetime but I did. I also saw players like Ronnie Clayton and Brian Douglas in their heyday. But to see Tugay pass a ball with pinpoint accuracy or occasionally blast the ball into the back of the net from long range are definitely some of the highlights of my football watching days. He will be sorely missed when he has to give up playing. But, hopefully he will stay on and pass his skills to the next generation of Rovers midfield players.

Are any of the Academy youngsters being groomed as the next Tugay? Study the way he passes, moves and runs a game. Can you imagine how good they would be on younger legs. Surely he has to become a coach soon and possible future manager?

Ossy - that was an all time low from you - I hope Rayzer didn't see it!

morst which was lower the prozac jibe or his missus, i thought they were both in poor taste lol.
we had debates about tugay end of last season when we thought he wasnt going to get a new contract, and i think virtually everybody had him in there all time greatest rovers side, but could you imagine a 26 or 27 year old tugay in the 95 championship side they would surely have got the credit they deserve if he had been in that team.
stay happy morst, Rayzer is still trying to figure out which end to put the condom on, he's put it on his head and he's struggling to get it off.

I agree with everything said about Tugay. And I also go back to the 60s era. There is one ex Rovers' player who came close to Tugay and whom I would certainly put 2nd in the list of greatest ever Rovers passers of the ball - Gordon Cowans. Great left foot that Villa of course had the best of, but he still put in some great midfield displays for Rovers.

Hey Morst - Ozzy - Jeppo.....More plaudits for that fellow TUGAY...Just never seem to run out of them, the latest being is last two games. Immense quality(& in the nick of time) for had we kept on the 4 goal scenario we would have been in the sticky stuff!! Thankfully we have got back to what we know the team is capable of -TIGHT AS CRAMP in defence !!

I was concerned but hey I'm feeling warm all over again...Take it easy fella's must dash my time on the computer is running out(pesky public libary!!)

Bring on Utd !!

In modern football you do not see players like Tugay that much, with all of the money being banded about, there is no loyalty but here we have a true Rovers legend, may it carry on but we all know it will end....then...just maybe...he will be our manager.

TILL WE PLAY THE BURNLEY ........ NO NEVER NO MORE!

hey woody, good to hear from you! Yeh, I was tempted to mention the 'Red Bull Strazbourg away' game again, where Tugay was awesome...but I resisted. I was gettin slightly nervous myself, and I'm sure it won't all be plain sailing, but things look promising under Ince, and there's loads of positives. I think he's learning along the way too (re the media plus the need to have a miserly defence!), so it's exciting times - and another well done to John Williams. Brave decision, but looking to be a good one.

Hi All,
Isn't it funny how you miss Rayzer and Warnock03 when they are not there? It's like someone has taken away the toilet in your house and you have nowhere to go!

Jeppo - don't wind me up again. Ince was a no brainer just like Sparky before him.
After last seasons price reductions (5 years too late) were a great success Williams put prices up 10% in a credit crunch and now look at the gates again. He will always be the man who emptied Uncle Jacks stadium. He does not pick the team or have to worry to much about finance thanks to the Sky money and Walker trust support during his time at the club. He had one big challenge - fill the stadium but he went about it like he was Rayzers dad or something!
