PAUL Ince has hinted that Robbie Fowler could be close to earning himself a deal at Blackburn Rovers.

The former Liverpool and England striker has been on trial at Ewood throughout pre-season after leaving Championship side Cardiff in the summer.

The 33-year-old, who has played pre-season games against Benfica, Sporting Lisbon, Wolves and Saturday’s final friendly against NAC Breda, has impressed Ince and seems to be close to earning himself a deal at Rovers.

Ince said: “Robbie is okay. He’s fit but he just needs to get his sharpness and I’ve told him that.

“But he’s a goalscorer - he will always score goals.

"If we can get him right, then there’s no reason why he can’t play a part in the season.

“If you look at Teddy Sheringham, he played until he was 41.

"He wasn’t blessed with pace, like Robbie, who I’m sure won’t mind me saying.

“But if we get him right, I’m sure he will score goals.

"You don’t lose that.”

Has Fowler done enough to earn a contract? Add your comments below.

Totally agree whats the point ? we already have santa, mcCarthy, roberts, Derbyshire why do we need fowler he is old and has no pace and yeah he did used to be a great player but that was then this is now. Whats going on with getting a replacement right winger ? thought we were going for pennant or larsson but it gone quiet on that front? any one know ?

The Player, Manchester says...

would love larsson to sign, another ex arsenal, available for cheap and fro ma championship team, easy signing, exactly what we need, think pennant lacks a bit of pace.

He obviously rates a 33yr. old has-been as a better addition to the squad than a 22yr. old current International earning rave reviews, say no more! Someone 'ava word wiv da guv'nor and sharpish!'

ince wonders why people are trying to sign our best players/unsettle us....maybe he should take a long hard look in the mirror! what the hell can robbie fowler add to us? if had still been playing in the top flight and had been fit i wouldnt of minded. but the guy hasnt played since xmas and was a disaster in division 1.

wonder why ince people are wanting to leave? it shows absolutely no ambition what so ever and gives out the message that blackburn are regressive and just 'jobs for boys'. If he signs fowler and wont sign annan i will literally be appalled.

If he wants the fans on his side this is not the signing.

A thoroughly disillusioned Blackburn Rovers fan.

So we take a chance on Fowler in an area we are quite strong, but don't bother with Annan in an area where we are relatively weak. Makes sense.

I'd personally save the money of Fowlers wages to help pay (who knows even fully pay) for Annan's.

Don't get me wrong I'll judge Ince on results, I just don't see why we are bothering with Fowler but not with Annan.

I completely agree 110%.

Strikers is our strongest area - strengthen our paperthin midfield!

I live in the Liverpool area and Robbie Fowler lives relatively close to me - I saw him 2 weeks ago at the petrol station and he was like a bloody beached whale.

I agree I feel Ince is getting a rough ride media wise but moves like this just make him look like an absolute clown and cretin. Buck up sharpish Ince, this is the Premier League.

I don't know about you guys, but I thought Fowler looked totally out of his depth on saturday. He lacks pace and is carrying to much weight. I think by the time he's got fit then the season will be almost over so it's not worth the risk even if he's signed on a pay-as-you play deal.

I'd rather see a young academy player play instead. So thanks Robbie, but no thanks!

What's happening at Ewood, looks like an absolute disaster to me, signing Robbie Fowler? He's finished full stop! C'mon Ince sort the job out or we're in for a relegation fight, spend the money from freidel and bentley on a couple of quality players now.

Throughout the summer i've tried to remain postive about this season, in hope we would strenthern the midfield. But now im getting worried.

Defence looks solid, and up front, Benni, RSC and JR are all capable of causing problems ( a decent 4th striker would be useful)

As for our midfield - I fear we will be ripped apart this season.

Reid and Dunn look good in glimpses, but cannot sustain this every week, or even in 90 mins.

Tugay - a legend, but looked like his legs had finally gone last season. No way could we relay on him.

Emerton/Derbyshire - a full back and striker respectivly, not Right Wingers.

Pedersen - decent in glimpses, but head drops, after a few poor results, then takes 6 months to get his "confidence back"

Villenueva - untried at this level, don't think the managemet have even seen him live yet - only video's and a word from his old club's chairman.

Vogal - Quality! but Has just been a sub during pre - season, ince does not seem to rate him.

I honestly think unless we get at least 2 Midfielder's to start in the team, then we could be facing a big struggle. People won't like me saying this, but if we want to stay clear of a relegation fight, then we MUST even look to panic buy in this area.

Im not slating Ince, because he needs judging on results, and he must look to bring in the best he can, for the time being.

As for Fowler? disgraceful. The guy has given nothing to football for the past 5 years

Fowler has not done it for years. He didn't do it at Leeds, City or Liverpool and Cardiff was a joke. Why are we sending out Gallagher on loan, a Blackburn lad through and through, and taking on this has-been? Utter rubbish.
I like the fact that Ince has been giving some of the youth a go in the pre-season but the results show that it hasn't been a resounding success, so whilst they are still developing get us another midfielder and another winger sharpish.

Cluster Bomb, Blackburn says...

Didn't want Ince in the first place but now that we've got him we have to live by his judgement, at least until he proves whether he can cut the mustard or not.

If Fowler aint gonna cost us very much then he could have his uses even if it's just for stregthening Ince's authority because a weak manager would be a disaster however you look at it. Then there is always the possibility that he could pass off some of his vast experience onto other players and he might even get the odd goal as substitute, ya never know.

Skelf, Stavanger says...
12:36pm Tue 12 Aug 08

I have no problem with Fowler, but he is not in his best form so if he stays for cheap he could probably help some of the other striker, and maybe get in better shape. "Pay as he play"

But what is going on? If we need players with routine why don't we try Ljungberg "pay as he play", and why don't we sign quality players like Annan og Breciano in positions were we don't look strong. If we want to sign a stiker, why don't we sign Salvador Cabanas that plays alongside Roque in Paraguay. He will come cheap because almost out of contract a player that will cost us approx £2 and worth more than 10 times that valuation.
Incredible pace, scores lot's of goal good strong player like Tevez.
Just what our team needs to attack the space behind the defence, this will give more space to our wings and create more oppotunites in front off defenders.

Sign him a player with potensial, we got the enviroment in our club with other Paraguayans.

If we want to keep up with the other teams and do better. Then we need players that will significant improve the team, or in a amount of time will blossom
I have seen a lot of matches and infact think Cabanas have been eqal or better than Roque, I know that Wigan have been close to signing him. Are we even aware that player of the year i Latino America 2007 are interested coming to premier league.
I don't understand why Rovers isn't following him.
My appeal CABANAS for BLACKBURN ROVERS, COME ON

I'm down in London and surrounded by Gooners, Spuds, Chelski's and of course, sarvern ManUre & Scouse fans - all of whom are pi$$in their sides at this cowardly act. Pay as U play is no concession - if he "had it" and therefore "don't just lose it" to quote Ince, surely he'd have scored in one of the many friendlies he played in. Ok, he may have only had a few mins here or there but this is the Premiership... thats all the time quality strikers need to make an impact. Fowler sadly, is no longer an impact player... I wouldn't even palm him off on the Dingles, he's that bad...
Talk about being in over your head... this backlash alone should be enough for Ince to see he's losing us fans before the season starts!

Fowler eh? Who next, maybe Ince could go back to playing. We'll see if Stan Collymore wants to join, buy Kevin Phillips, bring Okocha out of retirement, we've already got the mighty Tugay...then who knows, we might top the league.....for our combined player age!

I was chatting to a customer recently about Robbie Fowler. My customer told me he was friends with an ex-Man City physio. The Man City physio had told him that when Fowler was at Leeds they made a real mess of his hip - too many dodgy operations. He also said he would never be the same player again.

We have got quality up front, and young strikers coming through. What is the point in signing Fowler?

doom and gloom?

its only the prospective signing of fowler, bit obvious really.

bit far fetched saying stuff like the snipers are back and doom, and gloom, its what the majority of rovers fans think.

what is the point in signing fowler?
ince hasnt even answered that question properley yet, he couldnt even score a 'proper' goal in pre season.

"But he's a goalscorer,he'll always score goals" yeh right, down pleasington on a Sunday morning after a night out on the ale. The good news is that he's only 33, Teddy Sheringham played 'til he was 41! Looks like Ince is thinking of giving him an eight year contract. For gods sake give us some hope, there must be about £15 million sitting arond somewhere and we can't even take "a chance" on Annan for £1.5million, now that IS a joke. The squad is just not strong enough and relegation is a distinct possibility, sort it NOW!

Blue Rover, Blackburner in London says...

Sorry!! i couldn't resist making a joke, however I am far from a doom and gloom supporter as you put it. I've been on here trying to get people to give Ince a chance.

I'm sure we'll be fine this season, I just think the signing of Fowler is hilarious, he had a s*#t time at Liverpool a few seasons a go and if they couldn't get him fit, what makes you think we will.

Anyway, otherwise I'm happy with the goings on at the moment, we just need to get a few more signings in before kick-off.

I'm genuinely excited at the prospect of seeing how Danny Simpson does for us and if Villanueva can pull off the skills that we're hoping for. If Pedersen can get back to his best then that'll be like a new signing (don't forget, he was quality before last season), Mcarthy will hopefully have his head screwed firmly back on and Robinson could turn out to be a shrewd purchase (he's still young).

So there's no doom and gloom here!!!!

I just hope that if he does sign him the Blackburn boo-boys don't get on his back. I heard some boos already when he came on against Breda.

Why can't people just keep quiet if they are not prepared to get behind the team?
