Blackburn Rovers boss: Derbyshire will get a chance

BLACKBURN Rovers boss Paul Ince has told striker Matt Derbyshire: “You’ve got a big part to play for us this season”.

The England U21 inter-national started just five Premier League matches last season as he competed with Roque Santa Cruz, Benni McCarthy and Jason Roberts for a forward berth.

In part, the 22-year-old was hampered by injuries and underwent a double hernia operation at the end of the season to rid the problem.

Now, Derbyshire is fighting fit and bagged his first pre-season goal in Saturday’s 4-2 friendly defeat at Wolves.

And Ince has stressed to the former Great Harwood Town striker that he will play a key role in their forthcoming league campaign.

“Matty is certainly going to play a big part of our season,” said the Rovers manager.

“He’s different to the rest of the strikers. He’s hungry, young, and has got a lot of desire.

“I suppose you do wonder (what will happen) when a new manager comes in.

“But I had a chat with Matty on Friday and I told him I want him to stay here.

“I told him he’s a young kid that has come through the ranks - and that he's a goalscorer. I told him he will play a part in the season.”

Roque Santa Cruz joined Derbyshire on the scoresheet in Blackburn’s friendly loss at Molineux.

And Ince is now delighted to see all his frontmen – bar Robbie Fowler – with a goal under their belt in pre-season, following McCarthy’s efforts against TSG Hoffenheim and Sporting Lisbon, and Roberts’ strike over Benfica.

He added: “That is four of our strikers who have all scored goals. We are just waiting for Robbie to score now and I’ll be happy.

“It is important for strikers to score their goals. But it is also important for them to be involved in general play and the way we want to play.

“I played Matty up front (against Wolves) because I felt that he was probably the only one that could really get in behind people and stretch defences.

“He’s a quick lad and the timing of his runs are exceptional. It was nice for him to score his goal. It was a good finish and I’m pleased for him.”

i am glad that he is giving matty a chance he has waited long enough for it

Matt.., says...

Yeah, not exactly what I'd call 'established' with all 8 games. I'm hoping he's signing a couple of right backs with Simpson being cover. By the way, with all these loan signings what is going on with the finances? We should have a shed load of cash to spend after Bentley going. Is he saving up to make a huge signing (Wright-Phillips please) or do we not have as much as we thought?

matt you and me both but what bothers me the only player that we have actually signed that will be at the club for a few years is paul robinson the others are loans i for one would like to see lennon or as you say wright phillips but what i have seen so far does not instill me with confidence

You are all living in dreamland. Wright phillips!! as if we can afford him. Spurs have said they arnt selling Lennon so why keep going on about it?
Arsenal took 7 mill of the Bentley fee so no, we dont have loads of cash. The rumoured 10 mill we had was exactly that, a rumour. Just accept we have no cash hence Incey is doing well to get the players he is getting.
We will never have money trying to survive on the gates we get. As well as being small we charge the least as well!!

I'm glad Matty's gonna be playing more footy. The Blackburn born and bred lad deserves a chance. He does well when he plays.
COME ON ROVERS!!

Oh you load of moaners, come on!!
Danny Simson is a very good full back and Sunderland tried to hijack that deal too, also, we had others in for Villanueva but he came here also. Now we have three signings and hopefully Annan who incidentally Hughes tried to sign last year so lets give Incy some credit. he says today, probably including Annan there would be two more signings before the new season starts, thats five, we sold only 2 so we will have a stronger squad than last season and Incy is giving Derbs a chance too, I think his runs are exceptional and he ghosts in at the back stick which is what Bellamy did at Rovers!!
Give the guy a chance to **** the squad and do what he thinks needs to be done.
If it goes pear shaped then complain.

He didnt say we have 10 mill. He said we have a certain amount to platy with. He never said a definite amount. As i said, pratt.
The proof is in the spending. I look forward to your apology in 2 weeks time when we have spent around 6 mill, nowhere near the 21 mill you have quoted.

Its about time our fans realised it and started living in the real world and give ince a chance. Im telling you, we wont spend over 6 mill.

Blackburn manager Paul Ince faces a battle to win over a significant number of his players who are not impressed by the way he has tried to impose his personality on the club.

Ince is preparing for his first season as a top-flight manager and was a surprise choice to replace Mark Hughes, despite success in the lower divisions.

Some players have been less than enthusiastic about Ince's approach to training, which is said to vary drastically from Hughes's meticulous, scientific method, while others have complained that the former Manchester United midfielder is too egotistical.

While it is not yet a full-blown rebellion, a good start to the season is crucial if matters are to settle down.

Easy target: Ince's players preferred the more scientific approach of Hughes

Ince's assistant Ray Mathias has been put in charge of the majority of the training, just as he was when the two worked well together at League Two clubs MK Dons and Macclesfield.

This approach has been successful at United, for example, where Sir Alex Ferguson's former No 2 Carlos Queiroz took most of the training. It is also normal for players to moan about a new manager as he looks to shake them from established routines and impose his personality.

Nevertheless, it is clear that the relatively inexperienced Ince, only 40, faces a challenge if he is to have his squad fully onside for the first Premier League fixture at Everton a week on Saturday.

Blackburn boss Ince raids former club United to sign defender Simpson on loan

Ince has seen two of the club's most important players leave, with winger David Bentley sold to Tottenham and goalkeeper Brad Friedel to Aston Villa.

Bentley is believed to have shown dissent in his last days at Rovers, walking off in disgust when a trainer ordered him to do 20 press-ups as punishment for having his arms folded.

One senior player said: 'We've gone from a well-organised, well-drilled back-room staff to one that feels like it's been patched together. A lot of us wanted to give him a chance to see how it worked out, but it's not looking too good.'

Ince has also lost chief scout Mike Rigg, who is expected to become the fifth member of Rovers support staff to link up with former boss Hughes at Manchester City.

Ince is trying to keep on board striker Roque Santa Cruz - despite interest from City and United - and also hopes to get another forward, Benni McCarthy, in shape after being disappointed with the South African's condition following the summer break.

Ince is fighting to keep Santa Cruz

Ince landed right back Danny Simpson, 21, on a season's loan from United and welcomed highly-rated 22-year-old Ghana midfielder Anthony Annan for a week's trial.

Norwegian side Start want £2million for Annan, who partnered Michael Essien in the Africa Cup of Nations. The player has also attracted interest from Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund.

Ince is giving trials to Bordeaux defender Paul Baysse, 20, and Lens midfielder Julien Sable, 27, but new midfielder Carlos Villanueva has been forced to stay away after being struck by chicken pox.

sage burnley - he has a point - forget the talk - lets see the facts - and the action.
We obviously cant compete financially because of the uneven playing field and Rovers board do a fantastic job - but your are not going to see anything like 21 million - so sage has a point then - nice to see a Rovers fan from Burnley - eh

Ince Already Facing Mutiny - Reports
Posted 05/08/08 09:02EmailPrintSave

Blackburn Rovers players are reportedly on the verge of mutiny after losing faith in Paul Ince just weeks after his appointment as the club's manager.

Ince has never managed a Premier League side before and, at the age of 40, is one of the youngest bosses in the league. According to The Daily Mail, he is already struggling to quell the threat of a rebellion after disillusioning his players 'by the way he has tried to impose his personality on the club'.

'Some players have been less than enthusiastic about Ince's approach to training, which is said to vary drastically from Hughes's meticulous, scientific method, while others have complained that the former Manchester United midfielder is too egotistical,' the newspaper reports.

David Bentley, who has since left the club, is reported to have walked out of training in disgust after being ordered to do 20 press-ups 'as punishment for having his arms folded'.

An unnamed but 'senior player' is quoted as complaining: "We've gone from a well-organised, well-drilled back-room staff to one that feels like it's been patched together. A lot of us wanted to give him a chance to see how it worked out, but it's not looking too go

There is a report i just read saying lennon was inces top target. Might be paper talk but it would be good. I don't think anyone is being over negative from what i've read here, just wondering where the money's going and as if it isn't a little worrying that we have signed a guy with no experience as our main choice right back (I am sure he's talented and hope he comes good which he probably will do in time). When you think about it we should have money from the January transfer window when Hughes didn't spend and sold Savage, plus 3 mill from the Walker investors plus 3 or 4 mill from league positions last season then 7 or 8 mill on top from Bentley's sale. If that is the case we should have around 15 mill to spend so how can we not afford these players? Also I do think people should be less critical of Ince- afterall it was the fans who pushed so much for his appointment over more experienced alternatives. I would have preferred someone with more experience at the time but now we've pushed the board into appointing Ince i think we ought to get behind him.
