BLACKBURN Rovers suffered a 2-1 defeat in their latest friendly with Sporting Lisbon.
Having beaten Benfica 3-2 in their opening match in the Guadiana Cup on Friday evening, Rovers were hoping to seal a quick-fire double in the Algarve by claiming the scalp of a Lisbon side that finished second in Portugal's top division last term.
However, despite taking the lead at the Vila Real de Santo Antonio Stadium, courtesy of a goal from Benni McCarthy, Paul Ince's side were narrowly edged out on the night.
Returning to Portugal for the first time since he quit Porto two years ago, McCarthy fired Rovers into a 19th minute lead, when he emphatically converted a penalty after David Dunn was tripped in the area.
However, Lisbon struck back two minutes later, thanks to a stunning free kick from defender Pedro Silva.
Lisbon's Tonel then bagged the winner midway through the second half when he scored from an acute angle.

the team was pretty much 50% youth 50% experianced, and to only lose to a good team like sporting 2-1 is a great result.
