Blackburn Harrier Alison Leonard from Chorley finished in fourth place in a new personal best of 2:01.82 in a quick ‘On Camp with Kelly’ 800m invitation race at the Aviva London Grand Prix at Crystal Palace on Friday.

Despite collecting two PBs in less than three weeks, the 20-year old is unlikely to earn Commonwealth Games selection with the closing date passing on Tuesday. She is just short of the England qualification mark of 2:01 and is eighth in the Power of 10 rankings list with the top four having set the required time. She has accepted an invitation to run in a high class race in Lille next Tuesday where she will be looking for another fast time.

Hammer thrower Sophie Hitchon and pole vaulter Holly Bleasdale both have the Commonwealth Games Standards but the two Blackburn Harriers were thought to favour ending their seasons early following their medal winning performances at the World Junior Championships.

However, Hitchon, the reigning Commonwealth Youth Games champion, took part in the Folksam Grand Prix meeting at Gothenburg on Tuesday last week, throwing 64.34m for fourth.

Although a little below her own UK Under-20s record of 66.01m, she was once again well above the qualifying mark of 62m, and she remains second in the senior rankings. Holly is joint second in the senior pole vault standings with 4.35m, 20 centimetres above the required standard.

The Commonwealth Games will be held in Delhi in India from October 3-14.
