The National 12 Hour Championship held around Garstang and the Fylde on Sunday resulted in an incredible course record of 292 miles clocked by winner Julian Jenkinson of Southampton.

Of our four East Lancashire entries, three finished when Blackburn’s Fraser Snape had to retire with shoe problems after several hours riding.

David Tomlinson of Clayton-le-Moors won the North Lancashire Road Club 2010 Championship with a personal best of 234.39 miles, just beating Great Harwood’s Harry Haseley’s 232.09 miles which was also a PB.

Nelson Wheelers’ Peter Heywood finished with 216.43 miles to take his own club 12 hour title and great credit is due to all finishers after a gruelling half-day in the saddle.

The North Lancashire Road Club 10 mile at Clitheroe was the final event of the 2010 season and was won by Blackburn and District CTC’s Ian Stott with 23 minutes 26 seconds in a close finish that had Duncan Park of the Road Club second in 23-36, Cheshire’s Alex Royle third in 23-42 and Rossendale’s Paul Warrener fourth in 23-58.

In the season-long 10 Mile Points League, Blackburn hairdresser Gary Sedgwick came out top with 94 points followed by a dead-heat for second between David Tomlinson and Duncan Park, with 69 points and Jonathon Conway fourth with 54 points.

The Rossendale Road Club 10 mile at Hapton was won by Cheshire visitor Alex Royle, who had set a course record of 23 minutes 17 seconds two weeks ago but was slowed to 23-50 on this occasion.

It was enough to put Park into second with 24-19, Warrener third (24-58) and Roy Flanagan fourth (25-53).

The fact that teenager Royle improved to 19 minutes 59 seconds in an event near Hull at the weekend demonstrates what a demanding course the one at Hapton is.

The Rossendale events finish on August 31 with their Hill Climb the following week.

In the east of the county, the Pendle Forest club had their own Ian Duckworth fastest over 10 miles in 23-58, Steve Singleton second in 26-18 and Nelson Wheelers member Peter Haigh third with 26-43.

The Blackpool Nocturne Circuit races on Saturday evening will be a major spectacle for cycle racing fans with the new circuit based on the Winter Gardens lit by street lights and early illuminations.

Racing starts at 6pm with the main event starting at dusk at 8.45pm and includes UK based pros including our own Steven Burke of Motorpoint and Simon Wilson of Cyclepremier-Metaltek.
