NEW POLL: Who do you want as Blackburn Rovers boss?

10:55am Thursday 12th June 2008

comment Comments (148)   Have your say »

FANS' favourite Alan Shearer has ruled himself out of the running for the Blackburn Rovers manager's job - so who do you now want to replace Mark Hughes?

Sam Allardyce and Paul Ince are expected to be the bookmakers' favourites when they redraw the book today.

Yesterday, Allardyce had been backed into 6/4 favourite and is now expected to be an odds-on chance, just ahead of the MK Dons boss.

Ince, meanwhile, insists he has not been contacted by anyone at Rovers as yet.

He said: "I have just come back from holiday in Portugal, and I'm going to sit down with my chairman and take it from there.

"But I've not spoken to Blackburn.

"It's flattering to be linked with any job, especially in the Premier League, so it goes to show that I have done okay in my management career.

"But there's nothing concrete (to the Blackburn link).

"I'm not sure what the situation is and in the next two or three days I'll probably have a better idea of what's going on."

And the former England captain added: "I believe in time I will get to the Premier League, it's just a case of when I want to take that leap."

Several other names, including the former Chelsea coach Henk Ten Cate, are still thought to be in the frame as well, and an appointment is now unlikely before next week.

Vote for who you want in our special poll below, and let us know the reason why in the comments box below.

For me it has to be Laudrup, 1 season in Norway 1 league title, Getafe 8th cup final and q-final in UEFA. Played in the "dream team" and he's available & renowned across europe, otherwise its Ince, young hungry ex ferguson disciple and of course he's well known in europe.

what is this fascination with henning berg, hes already strugglin with his outfit fc lynn oslo, when theres other men avaiable like advocaat or laurdrup, we shouldnt be shortlisting the likes of him, mcclaren or ince who arent big names nor ones with enuff experience that can attract any players to stay or sign!

Voting is dependent on who has put their name forward or really in the frame, of the ones above I have a gut feeling that Ince may just be the one, Advocaat could be ok but is quite old, No Ten Cate on the poll or laudrup?
Does the Telegraph know these are out of the frame? Tell you what, peter White would have been spot on, he knew everything and the board and players trusted him, of course Peter was reporter for rovers for many years and that takes time to build such trust, nowadays reporters move on so quickly!!

I still have a feeling someone will emerge as a dark horse here after interview and I wouldnt rule out Berg, very well respected, ex Rover and popular too.

Sam Allardyce will make his pitch for the vacant manager's job at Blackburn Rovers today knowing Alan Shearer is out of the running.

Shearer's dramatic withdrawal has opened the race to succeed Mark Hughes, with Allardyce, Paul Ince and former Chelsea assistant Henk Ten Cate now regarded as the most likely Rovers bosses.

While Allardyce would still be regarded as an outsider, not least because the Blackburn fans were not keen on the tactics Bolton employed under his charge, he is the most experienced of the trio and chief executive John Williams is keen to see the one-time England candidate.

Williams has already declared there will be no announcement until next week at the earliest but the mere fact he is seeing Allardyce today suggests the matter is getting closer to resolution.

There is little doubt both Williams and Rovers' support would have welcomed Shearer to the Ewood Park fold but after careful consideration the former Blackburn star opted against making a move into management, just six months after reaching a similar conclusion at Newcastle after being offered the chance to act as assistant to Kevin Keegan.

However, a local newspaper poll placed Ince as the next on the list, with Allardyce picking up just 10% of the vote.

It leaves him with some work to do in his chat with Williams although, having interviewed well with the FA when they were searching for Sven-Goran Eriksson's successor, that is not viewed as a problem.

Whether Allardyce could win over a sceptical Blackburn public is another matter, which is why Ince remains favourite.

Ten Cate is an interesting candidate though as he has plenty of experience too, even if most of it was gained in Holland.

Thought to be stalling on a management contract at Panathinaikos to see what, if anything, Blackburn have to offer, Ten Cate does have the credentials to manage a top level English side.

A member of Frank Riijkaard's coaching team during two successful La Liga campaigns and a Champions League win at Barcelona, the 54-year-old has let it be known he would jump at the challenge offered at Ewood Park and may yet emerge as a live contender.

What a class jot the Telegraph is doing here! Our reporter has no contacts and hasn't a clue so we'll resort to the "Fans Panel" approach and hope we hit on a name.
What happened to all the "I understand Shearer has expressed an interest garbage..." (loosely interpreted as I personally haven't a clue what's going on but a bloke ina pub and someone omna website chat forum I was on said....)
the Telegrpah got it spectacularly wrong when Shearer left and they had people staffing the paper who were semi-competent then!

Shame that Big Al has opted out of a sensational return to Ewood Park. Now that he has ruled himself I think we should go for Dick Advocatt. He is a very well experienced manager, the only thing that concerns me is that he is 60 years old. Paul Ince is a good up and coming manager but I am not sure he is right for us along with Big Sam.

I think we should look into Henning Berg abit more and what he has done.

Lazy journalism from the LET. Without knowing the shortlisted candidates this poll lacks much credibility.
Notwithstanding, if he is on the short list, I would give the job to Laudrup. The fact that Shearer was approached indicates the sort of profile Rovers are seeking. I think Laudrup falls into the category of young, successful, big name who achieved at playing level. Laudrup goes one stage further - he has proved his managerial ability at Getafe.
Similarly, if it is a British manager, then go for Ince or any up and coming relatively successful man who might be on the short list- Martinez, Jones.
With a good squad available, I prefer to go for a hungry young manager motivated to succed than a plodding long ball merchant like Allardyce. Allardyce will certianly not put bums on seats and might even drive the casual supporters away.We will become another Wigan, scraping along among the dregs of the Premier League on average home gates of 17000.

In order of preference,
HENK TEN CATE - Has the experience of top clubs, such as Barcalona, ajax and as assistant manager at Chelsea, so knows the premiership.
BILIC - The way he has set out his national team would suit the premiership style of football - very good motivator of players.
LAUDRUP - main problem with him is he'd want get out clauses
No to BFS - though Rovers would be scraping the barrel to take him as his style of football is bad.He failed to impress at newcastle even when he had money to spend. Current Rovers players would not want to play for him.

Envy Chelski with the cash to buy Scolari... Why are we playing in the same comp as these people.... The big 4 should be in some seperate European league away from the likes of us mere mortals.

Anyway - after learning Bilic is in a pop group we def don't have time to entertain him - the job is too big for someone who spends his time playing in a friggin pop group.

We need a really wise head to handle the paltry funds we have to spend on players - since the fans categorically hate the thought of Sam I suggest we go for Advocaat ( and before you lot start up ....60 aint old ... believe me) and the Dutch are amongst the most cluey and attractive soccer players on the planet.

Well, here's some more Laudrup facts for you (and these one's are true)
He never managed in Norway, so I am not sure how he ever managed to win the league title.
His winning percentage as manager of Getafe was 31%. That's pretty impressive, huh? Played 38 Won 12, Lost 11, Drew 15. Goal difference -4. Sounds like a top manager. Let's sign him up right away!
Not sure what people have against Ince, since all he has done is win and win and win. Perhaps people don't want such boring predictability. Or perhaps it's because of his skin colour? In that case, Advocaat is definitely a better choice since he said he wouldn't sign any black players for Fc Zenit. Also let's not forget, in his last two years in Scotland he didn't win a single trophy, despite the fact that, since he was manager of Rangers, he had about a 50% chance of winning every domestic trophy. Gordon Strachan has a better record in fact. And there are people who want Advocaat to manage our club?

Here in Holland we are not very impressed by Henk ten Cate associating himself with the vacancy at Ewood. He has had a very chequered career, both as a player and coach. I hope Rovers are not blinded by the fact that he has been number 2 at Barca and Chelsea and managed Ajax (where he wasn’t considered a success !). Ten Cate never stays anywhere for very long, he seems to have an impact in the first season and then fades and falls out of favour. He is not what you want if you are looking to stabilise things after Hughes, he has never built a team and enjoyed consistency or success. He is at best a strikers coach but not a club manager. Advocat or Allerdyce would be a much better choice than Ten Cate. The only foreign coach who would impress me would be Laudrup.

Whoever the next manager is we need to spend some money otherwise the best we can ever hope for is mid-table medocrity. Whilst I dont suggest the Leeds approach of mortgaging everything to the hilt I cant seriously believe that there is no money or the club cannot take a calculated risk on investing in players. Perhaps we need less board members and a bigger squad!! Perhaps then we might have a chance of enticing somebody decent rather than being a refuge for sacked and poor managers (McClaren/Allardyce) or a short term stepping stone for someone who has promise.

Message for the board: Its time to put your hands in your pockets boys or float the club and resign!!!

As expected Shearer has declined to be considered and now I feel there is only one man who stands out head and shoulders above all the other muted possibilities and that man is Sam Allardyce. Sam took Bolton from the lower reaches of the championship into the higher realms of the premier league whereby for the last five years of his tenure Bolton were the most successful club outside of the big four, a fantastic achievement and a record even better than Mark Hughes Sam is renowned for his man management skills and his innovative approach to the technical aspects of football and he has the charisma to attract big name players whilst working on a very limited budget, players such as Okocha,Djorkaeff, Campo, Hernia, Stelios, N Gotty,Douf and Anelka and he was able to mould these very special and differing talents into a very successful team With such talented players they could not be described as an ugly team although Sam at times did play to his strengths, an example being the use of the very effective Kevin Davies as a battering ram at set pieces and this did draw some criticism from opposition manager such as Sourness after his Newcastle team had been soundly beaten by Bolton. Ivan Campo has written an open letter to Bolton fans after his recent departure which can be seen on Spanish website - www.Guillem Balague.com and the high esteem that Sam is held in by this famous international player is fully indicative of Sam's relationship with his players.
Sam had a short negative spell of less than six months at Newcastle, but a new owner quickly followed Sam and he had to accept that he was not the new owners choice. Sam was not provided with adequate funds and had to sell two of their star players, Dyer and Parker to provide funds and he then quickly acquired four new players. There was some initial criticism regarding these signings, but two of these players, Beide and Faye were in the top three in the end of season voting, another signing is serving a prison sentence, not one of Sam's best choices, and the fourth, a Spanish full back finished the season playing well . In all Sam was just not given enough time and I am confident that had he been given time and the resources Sam would have had success in that job. Now he is rid of his frustration regarding that situation he must be raring to go and the Rovers job would be the ideal opportunity to allow him to get back on terra firma and in so doing making us an even more successful club

I am sure that I can incorporate this strategy into the game of football at Ewood Park.

Well I can't speak for anyone else, but it tells me that stars don't generally play in the lower divisions (unless I missed Ronaldinho signing for Burnley). And something else it tells me is that if you can win without stars, then you are probably going to be able to win when you are in charge of a team that has a chance in hell of attracting them.
Ten Cate? Are you having a laugh? He's been a successful number two, but then so was Brian Kidd. Surely we don't want to go down that road again?
Laudrup? 31% winning percentage with Getafe doesn't exactly set my pulse racing.
Advocaat? Couldn't even win a two horse race when he was manager of Rangers.
Just because you can't pronounce their names doesn't mean they're going to bring sexy world-class football here.

Well, here\'s some more Laudrup facts for you (and these one\'s are true) He never managed in Norway, so I am not sure how he ever managed to win the league title. His winning percentage as manager of Getafe was 31%. That\'s pretty impressive, huh? Played 38 Won 12, Lost 11, Drew 15. Goal difference -4. Sounds like a top manager. Let\'s sign him up right away! Not sure what people have against Ince, since all he has done is win and win and win. Perhaps people don\'t want such boring predictability. Or perhaps it\'s because of his skin colour? In that case, Advocaat is definitely a better choice since he said he wouldn\'t sign any black players for Fc Zenit. Also let\'s not forget, in his last two years in Scotland he didn\'t win a single trophy, despite the fact that, since he was manager of Rangers, he had about a 50% chance of winning every domestic trophy. Gordon Strachan has a better record in fact. And there are people who want Advocaat to manage our club?
MikeD - football is a bit more than numbers!

Laudrup startet his manegement carer as a Denmark nationalside assistant - then he was the manager if Brondby IF (where he won the league and developed players like Daniel AGGER and Johan ELMANDER. He was a sound succes!!!

Then he went to Getafe, where he had absolutly no money to use, so he used his contact to "rent" players from Barcelona and Real Madrid - ie. ex. Ruben De la Red (fantastic player, who Real now has demanded back.)

In the first 8 games at least 1 Getafe player got a red card pr. game!!!, so it is quite hard to win those games - not to mention the problems regarding suspensions!!.

Then they started to stabilise and they got to the UEFA Cup quarter against Bayern Münich, who they outplayed in to games!! (Bayern just got lucky in the end) and he got them into a Cup final!

HE IS AN EXTREMELY GOOD MANAGER - and has proven that he can performe on a very limited budget!

After ending his playing career, Laudrup took up coaching, and became assistant manager of the Danish national team. He got his first manager job at former club Brøndby IF in 2002, whom he guided to the 2005 Danish Superliga championship. He chose not to extend his contract with Brøndby IF in May 2006. In 2007 Brøndby IF decided to name a new lounge at the stadium "The Michael Laudrup Lounge", with Laudrup's approval. He subsequently took over as coach of Getafe, Madrid's third club, and continued his coaching career with notable success there. He brought the club comparative success in the Copa del Rey and UEFA Cup, and the team's attacking style brought plaudits. However, he resigned after just one season in charge.

now this guy looks just what we need - his knowledge of the Eupropean game and players will be good and with 6 years of experience behind him - most of it successful !! just what rovers need !

Johnny Balt, says...
4:13pm Thu 12 Jun 08

it just gets better about Laudrup

After his playing career ended with Ajax Amsterdam, Laudrup became a coach at age 36 when he started serving as an assistant coach for the Danish national team coach Morten Olsen in 2000. The national team would play a 4-2-3-1 formation, depending on two fast wingers and with the aim to dominate games with a short-passing possession game. Together they led Denmark to the knock-out stage of 2002 FIFA World Cup, after which Michael Laudrup took the job as head coach for Brøndby IF in the Danish Superliga. As his assistant coach, Laudrup paired up with former Danish championship winning coach John "Faxe" Jensen, who had played alongside him in the Danish national team.

At the start of his reign, Laudrup proclaimed a tactical scheme close to that which Olsen and he had coached at the national team. Laudrup renovated the Brøndby team by letting a large contingent of older and experienced players go, in favour of several new offensive players, and he gave the chance to young talents from the club's youth scheme. To ensure the defensive strength of the team, he hired the proven national team player Morten Wieghorst. In his first year as head coach, he managed the team to a Danish Cup win against Odense Boldklub in the final. After finishing runners up twice, he finally led the team to The Double in 2005.

After finishing runners-up in the 2005-06 season, Michael Laudrup left Brøndby along with assistant coach John "Faxe" Jensen. He couldn't come to an agreement with Brøndby on renewing his contract, and therefore decided to leave the club. He was associated with several new jobs, including head coach of former club Real Madrid and rumours that he would replace Lars Lagerbäck as head coach for the Swedish national team.

On June 21, 2007 he was linked to a move to Madrid's La Liga team Getafe CF by sports newspaper Marca. This was confirmed on July 9, 2007. During his stay in Getafe the club reached the final in Copa del Rey, but lost to Valencia CF, and the quarter finals in the UEFA Cup (lost in extra time to Bayern Munich). During his tenure, as successor to current Real Madrid manager Bernd Schuster, he brought a new brand of exciting and free-flowing attacking football to the club which brought back memoires of Laudrup as a player. His team, which is not one of the established forces in Spanish football, also enjoyed comparative success. However, he performed only one season as manager, tendering his resignation in May 2008.

Big Sam would get my vote. Incey has done well for us at roundaboutland but he didn't solve the home form problem at a beautiful stadium (11 wins and 18 away) It's very unlikely, with his short experience, that he will be able to improve on 7th place at Rovers and he would be embarrassed if he dropped under that. I think Rovers fans need to get a grip of reality. Lets face the facts:
1. We have small crowds
2. We have no money
3. The Walker family want out hence no money
4. Our best players are likely to leave in the summer.
5. We are very unlikely to win anything in the near future.
6. The premiership is attracting more rich dictators than ever before.

With these facts in mind, why on earth would someone like Laudrup or Mancini come to Blackburn? Laudrup was wanted by Madrid and Mancini could walk into most top jobs.Ten Cate is the new Kidd.

Our best bet is big sam. Although the football will be rubbish at least we will not go down and he has experience of working with no money. Surely that is what we want and need

We all have our differing opinions regarding who we want as our next manager, and that is the way it should be, as we all care passionately about our club.

From the moment Hughes left, i have believed that Allardyce is the right man for the job. If, however, the board give it to any of the others in the running, then i will still be at Ewood next season, giving my wholehearted support to the new boss and the team.

Those who state that they are going to return their season tickets, whoever the board appoint, should be ashamed of themselves. Yes, you have the right to do just that, but the club need all the support they can get if we are to continue on our Premiership journey.

Half the people on here don't know how lucky they are. Just ask the supporters of clubs which are "so called" bigger than us or of a "so called" similar standing (Leeds, Sheff Wed, Leicester, QPR, Derby, Birmingham, Nottingham Forest, to name but a few). They will soon tell you that they would love to be in our position. We should all enjoy it whilst we can, because the margins between us finishing in the top 10 to the bottom 3 are not so great.

We have a fantastic squad of players at present, far better than Allardyce inherited at Newcastle, and without the expectations that their overly optimistic fans have, so anybody who thinks he is a failure bexause of that should think again. I understand his style of football is not the most attractive, but i can assure you that with Allardyce in charge, we would not get relegated next season. And anybody who thinks he cannot attract new or please our current big name players, should only look at the likes of Anelka, Campo, Diouf, who have been happy to play under him.

So again, i request, that if it is Allardyce, or Ince, Advokaat, Ten Cate or whoever, that we are all their on the first home match of the season, letting them know that we are 100% behind them.

Its good to see that people are writing Andy Nield's EXCLUSIVE story for tomorrow.

I am guessing it will go something like this:
Back Page - BFS and McBrolly story
Inside back two pages - 10 quotes off website saying how we all hate BFS and McBrolly
Main Story - Poll results. HTC, Ince, Advocaat and Laudrup.

I wonder if he will admit that they forgot to reset the poll when they moved HTC name onto that of McBrolly?

Let him do some work for himself - like find out which 40 names were on the list - its the same 5 or 6 on every fan site I read. I reckon there is a big surprise coming - mind you - £4million spend a year - Cardiff will be bigger than us soon.

I am not a Big Sam fan but out of curiosity, I went on to the guillem Balague website!!

I have never seen an article written by a player like that before, a cresdit to football, his proffesion and to his country!!
If Sam can replicate the team spirit he obviously achieved at Bolton, I will hold my hands up and say I was wrong, for as the scenarto goes on in our quest for a new manager, I am seeing more and more why he deserves consideration.
But, as has been said earlier, whoever JW and the board appoint, he will be the manager of Our team, The Rovers, we must support them and encourage them, together we can always be strong.

Dick Advocaat would be the perfect appointment for Rovers at this time. Here are the reasons for me:
1) Advocaat has a wealth of experience across the whole of Europe at both club and international level
2) Has recently had a very successful spell in Russia, winning the league and UEFA Cup
3) He has openly talked of his desire to manage in England and was keen on the job when Souness left
4) Would not use the club as a stepping-stone, unlike young managers e.g. Shearer & Ince, who would jump ship as soon as they had built up a decent reputation (like Hughes)

Well said. I agree wholeheartedly, and I think even those who are threatening to return their season tickets will change their minds once the dust has settled, whoever we get in. I agree that Big Sam would do a good job and would keep us up, but I don't think he will do it by playing exciting football. If it's purely a business decision, then he is probably the best choice, because we will remain a solid team, difficult to beat and guaranteed a top half finish. But, I think he brings a lot of baggage with him, of the kind that doesn't fit well with the Rovers image. I also think that it is universally accepted that Bolton played the worst brand of football of any premier league team. I personally think that Ince would be the best appointment. Not only would it be a historic appointment (first black manager in the top division), but I think that he has proven himself to be one of the most promising young managers in his short career, and if we don't take him now, I suspect we will regret it, because he will be taken by a Premier League club sometime this season or next and he will be a success. I think the calls for Henk Ten Cate are insane. This guy has Brian Kidd written all over him. Read the opinions of out dutch correspondent above for a more knowledgeable insight into his managerial achievements. I also rate Advocaat much less highly than many of the other people here. Nevertheless, Blackburn will always have my full support, and I trust JW and the board to make the right decision for th club.

Well said Old Timer. Like Kelbo, i too read Campo's open letter to Bolton fans and was extremely impressed. Part of it almost read like a "come and get me plea" to Big Sam. I'm not necessarily saying that we need him as a player, in fact i know that we don't, but if Allardyce were appointed, then to have him as part of the coaching team or as a contact in Spain to scout up and coming talent would surely do no harm.

I only hope that whoever does come in, does not reduce SIR TUGAY to a bit part player, but incorporates him into the coaching set up, as well as doing a similar scouting job in Turkey, as i have suggested for Campo.

But, as i have said, whether it be Allardyce, Ince, Ten Cate, Advocaat, Bilic or even Mclaren, i will still be at Ewood next season giving 100% support to the board, manager, coaching staff and team.

Shaun...Tut Tut You should be able to do better than that. Just not funny copying someone. If you send me your email I will write some material for you then you won\'t be embarrassed to come on here. Teacher.....\"Shaun must try harder and stop copying, but try\'s hard for a retard, One of his heads also needs attention\"
The life and times,

You indeed do say that copying someone is just not funny and i do believe the saying goes that "imitation is the biggest form of flattery"

What is also extremely flattering is the amount of non Blackburn fans who come onto our page, feeling the need to pass comment on Lancashire's premier team. It is only my humble opinion, but i feel there is an extreme amount of admiration involved from these other fans.

Oh how they would love to be in our position, and oh, how they must share our joy when we consistently finish in the top half of the Premier League and regularly reach Cup semi finals.

Oh how they must feel our pride, when members of our squad are regularly picked for their countries international teams, whether it be full, under 21 or youth level.

Oh how they must feel our excitement when our managers approach top European clubs such as Bayern Munich, Porto, PSV, Rangers, Liverpool, Arsenal, Feyenoord to sign their players.

Oh how they must feel our satisfaction, when we regularly take points off the so called "Big 4" both home and away.

So, as i have said, please feel free to continue coming onto our pages and posting your comments. They do indeed make us laugh, with their childishness content and the very fact that you come on our pages, is indeed, the biggest form of flattery that you can show us.

Too late. Stewie Griffin & Zippy were seen walking out of Ewood this morning shaking hands with John Williams.

Looks like a done deal.

Why are you all jumping on the Ten Cate bandwagon. I don't know anything about him, as I suspect is the case for most of those pushing his name forward. All I do know is that he is supposed to have upset most of the Chelsea squad. Is this the sort of manager we want ? I think not.

1. Oh how we would love to be in your position?
No manager, No assistant, No coach. No money. Mmn

2. Internationals? The two English ones want away NOW. Mmnn

3.Approach top clubs for players? You only get players they don't want. Warnock, Santa,Mmnn

4.Take points of big 4? I think its the rest you need to worry about, Birmingham, Wigan, West Ham, Aston Villa Mmnn.

No I think I will stay where I am I would not like to swap with you.
And when you morons stop coming on our blog, bluenwhite, DB, Rob etc,etc maybe we will stop coming on yours.

Do you not normally follow footy or summat?

No Burnley or Bolton conspiracy - he's a top manager.

Contrary to news reports - which have eminated from a dodgy Greek site - he's not signed for someone else. Although this will now obviously effect the voting as people will no longer be voting for him.

Chris Coleman is proven at premiership level. He got a raw deal at Fulham, and would do so much better at Blackburn.

As a Bolton Wanderers fan with a distinct and long standing fondness for the Rovers I have been reading the comments about the possible replacements for the excellent Mark Hughes.
Sam Allardyce is in the frame but for some inexplicable reason there seems to be a degree of negativity re his possible appointment.
I only wish that we at Bolton were discussing Sam's return in that he has been the best manager in the clubs history and for the last five years of his tenure he was the most successful manager in the premiership, excluding the big four and with respect even more succesful than Mark. Sam worked on a shoestring buget yet was able to bring a number of very talented players to the club and we had the most exciting time at Bolton in living memory and despite reports to the contrary we did see some very skillful football fostered by Sam's fusion of these special talents. It was obvious that Sam cultivated a very good dressing room, developing an excellent relationship with his players and he also had a good rapport with the fans and was always readily approachable at all times
A nice guy, a fantastic manager and if he becomes the new manager, myself and a couple of my pals will become staunch fans of the Rover whilst still retaining our affection for Bolton, our first ( but not Gartside & Megson ) in that we are fans of Sam the man. Please excuse a Bolton fan for getting involved in your situation, but I just felt that I had to make a comment
