Blackburn midfielder Robbie Savage insists Wales under John Toshack stand no chance of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup.

Wales' Euro 2008 qualification hopes all but ended by their 2-0 defeat to Germany, leaving them stranded on seven points, 15 behind the group leaders.

Savage, who last played for his country in 2005, said: "John Toshack told us to judge him after the European qualifying games. The truth is we have gone a long way backwards.

"I do hope he doesn't start the we'll make it to South Africa' stuff because that would be utterly ridiculous and we all know it."

He added: "There's more chance of me flying Concorde to the moon blindfolded than there is of you taking Wales to the South African World Cup.

"I do hope we aren't going to get a load of stuff about how Wales will qualify for South Africa.

"It's not going to happen and as a Wales fan I'm as dejected as the rest of the nation. Only 25,000 turned up for a qualifier against one of the world's best teams - that tells you everything.

"Just a few years ago under Mark Hughes we beat Germany in a friendly at the Millennium Stadium in front of 75,000 - that tells you how far we've sunk."

I think Robbie Savage has a real talent. Not just as a footballer but also winding people up. But these days he's plying this talent not just with deeds, but with words.

Just a few sentences last weeks and back came the Arsenal fans calling him names and protesting, not realising they had fallen deep into his trap.

Now he's doing the same to the man who is the personification of 'cutting off your nose to spite your face.' By making himself less popular he, in turn, provokes a reaction from others ultimately making them take their eye off the ball and thus proving what a brilliant professional he is.

My point will be made complete when John Toshack responds, he'll say something nasty again about when Robbie and Hughes were with Wales - and this time he may go a little too far - and he may cloud some of those great memories of Welsh football - and he may just upset the wrong people.... What Robbie Savage does is an art and he's one of the best at it!

Why is he saying anything at all?? Even if he is p*ssed off with the situation he should still be wanting the best for his country and that means qualifying for the Euros.

He should take note of Bentley's attitude, when he wasn't in england squads of teams he always said that he just wanted england to win first and foremost and if he could help that then all the better. If i was a player in the wales squad i'd be livid with him...

Well said Sav. Why would the Welsh FA make the changes they obviously need to if everyone buried their heads in the sand?

What is wrong with saying things need to improve or recognising that something is not working. When you loose 50,000 fans and can't play the best available player's it's time to move on.

Super,super Sav.
Super Robbie Savage.

Because he's a fan, Jay. But he's a fan in a priviledged position. He's where we all want to be - to say something about the team you love and they listen. Mix into that his talent of saying the thing that's going to have the most impact and that's a devastating combination.

Things are going great for us at the moment, but over the years we've all had a moan (as long as it's not during the match) and this is him having a moan about his national team, and quite rightly. I get the feeling that the players probably agree with him. I'm sure they would prefer to be playing in front of 75,000 partisan Welshmen as they were just a few short years ago.

If a manager was strangling the life out of my team like that, I would be shouting from the rooftops - but not being heard.

To me it is just another rant from someone who no one ever listens to. I'm sure if you actually knew him he'd be quite a laugh and i reckon his team mates prob like him but from what i know I really don't think most Welsh fans like the bloke.

He is a good and valuable player for us sure but the guy is a tool and represents just about everything that is negative about this era of football...

Of course he's listened to. That's why last week this, and other boards, were flooded with Arsenal fans responding to something he'd included at the end of an interview. I also know he's well respected within football circles as he is a good hardworking professional.

He only annoys the people he wants to annoy, cares not of the opinion of people whose opinion he does not value and people he doesn't respect (for his own reasons) but I'm sure most people live their life like that, I do.

But I think the best thing here is that 2 people with 2 opposing views (and your last sentence there was so wrong for so many reasons :-) ) can state them and debate them without resulting to name calling and abuse.

I think its obvious he does want the best for his country, its just tha it isn't going to happen with Toshack in charge. Savage should have played for Wales - on that point there is no debate. Toshack left him out because Savage remembered what a mockery Toshack made of Welsh Football when he resigned after 41 days in charge and then went on to criticise Mark Hughes tenure as Welsh manager, despite Hughes taking Wales to within one game of a major championship. Toshack is still living on past glories of his time at Real Madrid. Personally I don't think he could manage a ****

jimluftas, says...

Savage just sounds bitter. Every few months he comes out with something about Toshack. Fact is, Wales are crap cos they have crap players. They got lucky with Hughes for a while but still didn't qualify for any tournaments.
Any player who cared that much about their country would swallow their pride & apologise in order to get back in the team & do something about it on the pitch.

Lloyd, padiham says...

john toshack was agreat player and reached far greater heights in the game than savage. savage opened his big mouth when tosh was about to be appointed welsh manager making it quite plain he did not want to play for him.
