BLackburn Rovers title winner Stuart Ripley last night hit out at the England fans who turned David Bentley's dream debut into a nightmare.

Bentley was booed by home supporters after coming on as a late substitute in the 3-0 win over Israel on Saturday.

It follows the winger's decision to opt out of England's Under-21 tournament in the summer.

Former Rovers winger Stuart Ripley, who won two caps for England as a right winger, said: "It's ridiculous. I feel for him. He's a great player with fantastic technique and he doesn't deserve that kind of reaction.

"He made the decision to pull out of the Under-21s to keep himself fit and fresh for Rovers and for England, and to be booed like that is very disappointing.

"England fans can be very partisan about their own teams but they're passionate about their country as well and they should be getting behind their team. They should just appreciate him for what he is - a great player.

"He's worked hard and put in some great performances for Rovers and it's just a shame that people are doing this when they should be right behind him.

"The only thing he can do is work hard the next time he plays and if he pops up with a goal then everyone will shut up and soon forget about it."

Kevin Gallacher, the former Rovers and Scotland striker and, now Lancashire telegraph columnist, echoed his old team-mate's sentiments.

He said: "It was very disappointing but people were expecting it.

"It was only a small contingency of fans and hopefully he will win them over.

"Ryan Giggs took a lot of stick throughout his career for ducking out of Wales' friendly's. But big players only need to play in the big games.

"And David, who was in the senior squad before he was chosen for the European Under-21 championships, only pulled out of the Under-21s. He didn't turn down the national team.

"The Under-21s is used to groom players to make the step up and David is making the step.

"It was crazy but football fans are very fickle by their very nature and they forget what people have already done. Just look at what happened to Frank Lampard.

"David's only young but he's got broad shoulders and he won't let this bother him.

"He's got great potential for the future and I'm sure he will be a great player for Rovers and England."

Rovers chairman wouldn't comment on the booing incident but said: "I was delighted to see a Blackburn Rovers player playing for England.

"It's well deserved and it's great for the club to see him playing at Wembley."

Bentley made the right decision for himself, for rovers and for england. The problem with this is the way that Steve McClaren handled it with the media. McClaren let the papers rip into bents rather than explaining the situation properley. He obviously didn't realise he'd be needing him quite so soon!!

Just read a very frank interview with the boy Bents in the Mirror. Good to see the boo's didn't affect him realising his dream. Lets hope that was the first of many appearances.

I think Bentley has done very well.

Bentley will be a great player for Blackburn this season and I would like to see him next year at Euro 2008

Exacly, Mcclown said he's paying the price for ducking out of the under 21's when i read that I thought it was really unprofessional thing to say from an england manager, personally I think he's lost the respect of his players already.

Double standards here methinks. As if Rovers fans haven't ripped into people for very little reason! I remember I went to watch Rovers play at Chelsea & Graeme Le Saux received so much abuse it was untrue! This was a player who helped us win the Premiership. I joined in, it was fun. Footballers get paid loads & have to expect some abuse. Looks like David Bentley isn't that bothered. I wish everyone else would stop going on about it!

Stop reading Le Saux's whinings in The Times neil. If anyone it was Shearer who didn't deserve it, Le Saux can go lick my balls

I think he should not have been in the under 21's as he is 23......

As mentioned above, the under 21's are to groom younger players and not to play 1st team regulars who are over 21.

Two reasons why Le Saux was booed:
1) His pathetic display in Moscow.
2) More or less going on strike on the field of play during a Premiership match.

I thought he deservered the boos and the bad sign that he is going to get for a couple of games. He's handled it well for the matter of minutes whilst he was on the pitch playing, but from leaving England U-21 to England in the fashion he did, was very bad and unprofessional. He was still representing his country at the end of the day! he should of give it more time and played at the Euro, it put a downer on the U-21's and himself in he running, and i dont think McClaren had a choice to pick him. Save the embarassment of Bentley. He would of bee

n fine for rovers, very strong character and i do wish him well for the future of rovers and england.

i would NOT have booed david if i was there.. but we cant have a go at the fans who did.. they paid the money to watch the game... they are allowed there fews... same as we booed.. shearer, the chelsea rent boy, neill, same as we stand up at a game when a rovers player does a bad pass or misses and open goal.. and we stand up and say "what the F was that"

david will learn from it.. and it will make him a better player..

I will be watching the Chelsea match in a local pub Saturday that is decidedly pro Chelsea. Can someone give me a good Rovers chant like Wild Rover that would apply to a Chelsea Match. I know this is off topic but I assume Rover's fans will reply. Up Rovers!
Thanks

"Chelsea Rent Boys, Chelsea Rent Boys" to the tune of Gary Glitter's "Hello, I'm back again".

That way you can cover two bases - the Chelsea area's reputation for male prostitution and, by using a Glitter tune, the paediphilia conviction given to Graham Rix and the fact that Chelsea re-employed him after he served his sentence.
