AFC WIMBLEDON put their Accrington Stanley hoodoo behind them with a first win against the Reds in eight attempts.

Before the meeting at the Cherry Red Records Stadium, Stanley have won six and drawn one against the Dons but goals from Sean Rigg and Adebayo Azeez were enough to bring victory with a first Stanley goal for Adam Buxton proving too little, too late.

Both sides went into the game on the back of defeats and the visitors started positively with some forays into Wimbledon territory but it was the home side who crafted the first opportunities.

Stanley keeper Matt Macey made the first save, from Dons talisman Adebayo Akinfenwa, before Michael Liddle had to hack a George Francomb corner off the line.

The home team thought they were in front as early as the eighth minute when Dannie Bulman’s shot ricocheted back off the post.

Stanley seemed to up their game as a result, with Kal Naismith a whisker off target before seeing another 30 yarder turned around the post by home keeper James Shea.

Wimbledon took the lead eight minutes from the break when Akinfenwa threaded in strike partner Craig Tanner and his left foot shot was pushed out well by Macey. Unfortunately for the Arsenal loanee the rebound dropped to Rigg who drilled the ball home.

Moments later Tanner found himself one on one but his low strike was blocked and held onto by Macey.

Both sides went close before the break with Anthony Barry’s deflected cross close to creeping in before Liddle had to be on hand to thwart a Dons break.

Stanley emerged for the second period with renewed purpose and were millimetres from a leveller 10 minutes in. Luke Joyce picked out Barry with a pass from the left and the midfielder hit a perfect shot from outside the box that Shea got a finger tip to and turned onto the post.

Shea suddenly had work to do as he was forced to cut out a Joyce cross that was destined for sub James Gray but the more Stanley attacked the more they were vulnerable on the counter.

Macey produced a glorious stop from Barry Fuller’s venomous strike 15 minutes from time but two minutes later had the ball in his net again. Francomb charged down a Liddle clearance on the Stanley left and picked out sub Azeez in the box who had got between full back and centre back. The striker made no mistake, firing over Macey to make it 2-0.

Now it seemed all was lost for John Coleman’s team as Naismith hit a shot hopelessly wide but Buxton provided a chink of hope. On as a sub for his first appearance in four months after injury, the former Wigan man stabbed home at the near post from Naismith’s 88th minute cross to reduce the deficit.

Ultimately it was forlorn hope as Wimbledon ran down the clock to secure a valuable victory.
