Bowyer was upset at the manner of David Edwards’ 48th-minute winner and admitted his much-changed side did not do the ‘basics’ well enough and that their intensity was not of the required standard.

But he still believes they should have got something out of the game given that Wolves’ Carl Ikeme was the busier of the two goalkeepers.

Bowyer said: “It’s an understatement to say I’m not pleased – it was majorly disappointing.

“I didn’t think there was a great deal in the game.

“We spoke about being aware of the counter-attack from Wolves and we didn’t defend it well enough – it’s as simple as that.

“It was a blustery day and in conditions like that you have got to make sure you do the basics correctly, winning first and winning second balls – and we did not quite do that.

“But I 100 per cent thought we could get back into the game.

“Chris Brown had a half-chance, Craig Conway had a chance, Josh King had a chance, their lad hit his own post, and in the first half Markus Olsson flashed two great balls across the box.

“Has Jason Steele, our goalkeeper, made a save? That’s the frustrating bit for us. Don’t get me wrong, Wolves hit the bar, on the counter again, but our goalie has not been worked.

“It’s not through a lack of effort but we’ve got to be better, there’s no doubt about that.”

Rovers supporters made their feelings known after referee sounded Mark Haywood sounded his final whistle.

Their team has now won just two of their last 10 Championship matches, drawing four and losing four.

And, after Rovers’ third home loss of the league campaign, Bowyer was asked his opinion of the jeers.

He said: “The fans are entitled to their opinion at any football club when you lose a game.

“I think during the course of the game that environment we’ve seen here over many years, one thing for certain is, is it doesn’t help or inspire the players.”

While Rovers remain 10th, Wolves are now up to eighth after their fourth win in their last five league games and their third straight success at Ewood Park.

Wolves manager Kenny Jackett, whose team have now kept four consecutive clean sheets away from home, said: “It was a typical, tight Championship game.

“Blackburn have a very good home record so it is an achievement to come here and win.

“We got the crucial first goal and I felt in the second period we opened them up with some good football considering the conditions.

“We created a high number of chances, which we’re pleased with, and we deserved the win.

"When you defend you have to be a threat on the break and we were.”
