Blackburn Rovers star Tom Cairney misses out on Championship player of the month prize

BLACKBURN Rovers star Tom Cairney has missed out on the Championship player of the month award for August.

The versatile midfielder was up against Nottingham Forest winger Michail Antonio, Millwall centre back Alan Dunne and Charlton Athletic striker Igor Vetokele.

But despite a strong start to the campaign Cairney was beaten to the prize by Angola hitman Vetokele after he scored five goals in as many league matches following his summer switch from FC Copenhagen.

Cairney was named as Rovers’ player of the year in May after a superb first season at Ewood Park.

And the 23-year-old has certainly picked up from where he left off.

In the first five games of the Championship campaign Cairney has two scored goal of the season contenders, at home to Cardiff City and away to Norwich City, made one assist and had a hand in two more.

He has also made more tackles per match – 3.6, from a total of 18 – and created more goalscoring opportunities per match – 2.4, from a total of 12 – than any other Rovers player.

And he has done all that while playing in three different positions.

His stunning strikes against Cardiff and Norwich came when starting out on the right.

He operated from the middle of the park against Bournemouth and Blackpool and, after Rudy Gestede was ruled out through injury, in the No 10 role behind lone striker Jordan Rhodes against Wolves last Saturday.

It is a role which Rovers boss Gary Bowyer believes Cairney is equally at home at.

“It’s a topical conversation but what we do know is that wherever we ask Tom to play he always does his best,” said Bowyer, speaking late last month when questioned over what he believes Cairney’s best position to be.

“I think sometimes in that right-hand side role – it’s not a wide position – he’s very difficult to pick up as his two goals have proved this season.

“Sometimes when you play one-on-one in the centre it’s easier to cancel somebody out because you can go and stand right up against them.

“Tom could become a fantastic No 10 as well and that’s something we’ve looked at.

“We put him up there in the second half against Norwich and he did ever so well in that position at Burnley away last season.

“He’s a goal threat and it’s about us finding the position in which he is most creative.

“But we’re delighted with the progress he’s making in terms of a goal contribution.”

Wolves’ Kenny Jackett, whose promoted side beat Rovers 3-1 last Saturday, has been named the Championship’s manager of the month for August.

Not suprizing really as there's far better players in the league than Cairney. Not sure why he was nominated in the first place to be honest.Any-way if he did win let's face It at Rovers It would be the only thing he'd win as Under boring Bowyer and his negative tactics It's going to be a tuff struggle to stay in this League again this season.

Out with the lot of them.Venky's and bowyer.

Well at least it keeps him out of the limelight and under the radar a bit longer. Wouldn't want someone cominng in and nicking him in January. At some point he'll probably make the step up to the Prem but the longer he stays the better.

Exactly. We've got him until Jan but I fear we'll lose him to a bottom end Premier League club along with Rhodes during the transfer window, and I have this awful feeling that it could be Burnley who take them off us.

We seem to be nothing more than a feeder club to the Clarets at present. What has happened to my Rovers??

Being such a dedicated Rovers supporter Tom I'm surprised that you haven't yet mentioned how well the Clarets are getting along in the Prem - Let me see now, Oh yes bottom aren't they Tom, that must really fill your heart with glee, I bet it's such a relief being a Rovers fan not having to support those no hopers down the other end of the M65.

Put it this way, I'd give my right plum to be in their position right now, both in league status and financially. They are everything we should aim to be. Sadly we are now at least a decade behind them thanks to the farcical mismanagement of the last few years and should we go under as a result of FFP then I'm quite sure that I wont be the only Rovers fan who changes alliegance. Local team, Premier League, whats to think about?

Hello Burnley maggot, at least you admit that we Burnley maggots are a bottom end club. Must have banged yer head but the truth will out eventually. You can't even bottle it inside yourself. Embrace it, welcome it on board. Its okay though. We won't be a bottom end club for long, just a season really, then we will be on the road to where we belong. Div 3.

They are everything we should aim to be. Sadly we are now at least a decade behind them thanks to the farcical mismanagement of the last few years and should we go under as a result of FFP then I'm quite sure that I wont be the only Rovers fan who changes alliegance. Local team, Premier League, whats to think about?[/p][/quote]but youve already achieved everything we will never achieve,,youve won miles more silverweyre than us,,more derbys than us,,u have better support then us,,a better ground than us,,a longer history than us,, i wouldnt swap any of that just cos we in premiership for 1 season getting thrashed every week,,blackburn will always be a bigger club than burnley thats why we hate u so much and call u bstrds Ron Seal

What has happened to my Rovers??
we wont take em of u,,why would they come 2 us when they know theyll be on miles less money at a club thats already been vurtually relegated and will be playin infront of 10thous evry week once all the placcys have gone back to man u??????????

Being such a dedicated Rovers supporter Tom I'm surprised that you haven't yet mentioned how well the Clarets are getting along in the Prem - Let me see now, Oh yes bottom aren't they Tom, that must really fill your heart with glee, I bet it's such a relief being a Rovers fan not having to support those no hopers down the other end of the M65.
Put it this way, I'd give my right plum to be in their position right now, both in league status and financially. They are everything we should aim to be. They'll be c*mming in their collective claret and blue kn*ckers because they held the mighty Man U to a snore bore draw at Turd Morgue
Could have been worse. Could have been getting D!ck3d at last seasons League 1 conquerors. Holding ManU or getting ripped apart by Wolves.. Now let me think..

A striker's sole purpose is to score goals, so when one gets Player of the Month for doing the bare minimum expected of him it doesn't seem fair to those who excel in their roles. Antonio scored three and assisted three from the wing, surely a more deserving recipient of the award?

It's almost as if Vetokele is being rewarded for Charlton's surprise start to the season.
