BLACKBURN Rovers star Tom Cairney has been nominated for the Championship player of the month award for August.

The versatile midfielder is up against Nottingham Forest winger Michail Antonio, Millwall captain and centre back Alan Dunne and Charlton Athletic striker Igor Vetokele for the prize.

Cairney has picked up from where he left off after being named Rovers’ player of the year for last season.

He scored a stunning goal in the opening day 1-1 draw at home to Cardiff City before producing an even better, long-range effort in the 3-1 defeat at Norwich City.

Both of Cairney’s goals came when he started out wide on the right.

But the 23-year-old has also played in the centre of midfield and, in Saturday’s 3-1 loss at Wolves, behind lone striker Jordan Rhodes.

The winner of the player of the month award will be announced tomorrow along with the manager of the month prize.

In the running are Norwich’s Neil Adams, Wolves’ Kenny Jackett, Millwall’s Ian Holloway and Stuart Pearce of table-toppers Nottingham Forest.

If they award it based on an all round contribution, instead of just goals, I'd expect Michail Antonio to get it as he's been excellent for Forest and has three assists to go with his three goals from the wing.

Stuart Pearce has got off to a great start at Forest but I think Kenny Jackett deserves it based on the fact that Wolves have just been promoted and have beaten stronger opposition that Forest have faced so far.

Good to see Cairney getting the recognition he deserves though.

It's highly unlikely that this award would go to a player in a team lying 14th in the league and out of the league cup.
I look forward to later in the season when we get a player and manager award in the same month.

The five thumbs up gives a clue as to the minimum number of identities you have. You really are quite a sad little fellow aren't you? Have you thought of joining a Pilates group or something else that might give you the chance to meet real people?

Cairney deserves all the recognition he is receiving - even if he does not win this months award his performances for the Rovers have been excellent and he certainly is the `heartbeat` of the team. Hopefully with an improved defence behind him and a stronger player beside him, then he will see much more of the ball and we will see even more of his skills and goals as we go through the season.

Hi,

Do you prefer him out on the right or in the centre?

I personally prefer an inform Marshall out on the right.

Tom Cairney scores against Cardiff is a great winner and top class.

Hope he is clam down to pitch with more accuracy and stamina to put us in the top of the table at the end of this month.

Next FOUR match will set the tune, We need to WIN all of them, we cannot go into more defensive to win the match.

All the best to all the members and staff. "Rhodes is not for Sale" Thanks to Venky too.

Hi,

I personally prefer an inform Marshall out on the right.
It doesn`t actually seem to matter whether he plays middle or wide....he is still very effective and his natural style of play is to range across midfield anyway. But yes I would prefer him central and Marshall wide.
