BLACKBURN Rovers boss Gary Bowyer insists Shane Duffy must not be the only addition he makes to his ‘stretched’ squad.

Speaking after Saturday’s disappointing 3-1 defeat at Wolves Bowyer confirmed a deal to bring centre back Duffy from Everton will go through before the transfer window for permanent signings closes at 11pm.

But he also stressed the need for further reinforcements after Rudy Gestede and Josh King joined Tommy Spurr on the sidelines.

Bowyer, who was also missing left back Markus Olsson at Molineux because of a family bereavement, said: “We need some numbers.

“We only had four missing on Saturday but it left us really stretched.

“We are working hard to get some more in and we thought we had two loan deals done on Friday.

“But they didn’t happen and we’ve had to go back to the drawing board because we certainly need some more numbers.

“But everything has been agreed and sorted for Shane so that should be all done.

“Shane will bring a lot of size and quality and we’ve known about him for a long time from watching him at youth level at Everton.

“He’s dominant in both boxes, especially in the air.”

Bowyer admitted his side could have done the with physical presence that the 6ft 4in Duffy – who is on standby for the Republic of Ireland squad which takes on Oman in a friendly in Dublin on Wednesday and Georgia in a Euro 2016 qualifier in Tbilisi on Sunday – can offer against Wolves.

Rovers were masters of their own downfall on Saturday with the three goals they conceded coming as a result of poor defending.

But they were not helped by the loss of talismanic striker Rudy Gestede – who watched the match from the stands – with what the club described as an ankle injury.

Bowyer said: “It happened in training on Friday and he felt he would be okay.

“But he failed a fitness test and now we’ll have to monitor it.”

Bowyer was boosted by the inclusion of Chris Brown in his squad for the first time.

But the striker, who has yet to kick a ball for Rovers following his summer switch from Doncaster because of a troublesome knee injury, remained on the bench.

Bowyer said: “We didn’t want to risk him as he probably only had five or 10 minutes in him.

“But we thought mentally it would be a boost to get him on the bench.”

King was declared to be ill.

The winger has been named in the Norway squad for their friendly with England at Wembley on Wednesday.

If Brown was fit enough for the bench he should have been fit enough to start, he would have been a perfect replacement for Gestede and if you say you needed additional height in the squad well that would have been your answer.
How many times have you played one up front away from home and we usually end up with nothing. Last year we played an attacking formation at Leeds and we played them off the park. When Williamson starts away from home it usually spells trouble, the guy is simply not good enough.
Not sure how many replacements we need but if you continue with your negative tactics away from home it won't matter how many replacements we have.

An experienced defensive midfielder please, one who can put his foot on the ball, direct traffic and give us some much needed drive and energy in what is our weakest position on the pitch.

That's why our defence is under pressure all the time, we won't improve defensively unless this position is sorted out.

"We need some numbers" we need some class. If we can't improve on what we've got, instead of increasing the wage bill keep our money in the bank and put someone from the youth on the bench, there is no point in signing someone who can't get in other championship sides.
We have just got rid of some deadwood what's the point of replacing them with more?

Fair comment but I don't think he will be deliberately looking to go out and buy deadwood will he?

Yes he has made some errors in the past, name me any manager in any league in the world who hasn't, but look at Cairney, Spurr, King, Conway, Evans, Gestede etc; he's proving he's a pretty shrewd operator in the marketplace.

As long as we don't loose any of our better players today let's see what happens.

Twelve months on and we are no further forward.

No shows again v Scunthorpe and Wolves

Letting in an average two goals a game

Repetitious injury and illness problems

Inability of the manager to swing a game back in his favour.

Cannot control the game due to a totally inadequate midfield. No link with forwards and no protection for back four

Even more worrying is young players who should be improving are going backwards.

Rhodes must be totally disillusioned as promotion looks a distant fantasy.

More signings. Central midfield is vital if we are to progress from the current hole we are stuck in .

went on Saturday and was more disappointed with the way we shot ourselves in the foot, to be fair to the defenders the first goal was given away my Williamson ( everytime he got the ball he looked like giving it away), and the second was the strangest wall I have ever seen we were sat right behind it and everyone could see what he was going to do. After that we were chasing the game , I though Baptiste had a good game, upfront we just did not commit enough. One thing that is clear Rhodes is a great finisher but he does not play that well with his back to goal, with Gestede upfront I genuinely think it would have been a different result.

What I was surprised about was how few times our wingers got in behind their defence , their right back was clearly pretty slow , but Marshall never seemed to attack him. This team needs to play 2 upfront, attack is going to be the best form of defence. If I had to choose 2 position to strengthen at the minute it would be GK and CDM.

Couple of weeks to get the lads off the injury bench and start again.

Same old same old. Another mediocre season is a probability. We have too many journeymen and too few quality players. The likes of Varney, Williamson and Taylor were released by their previous clubs for a reason and we have yet to see just how good Brown will be. King is far too patchy - head down and up a blind alley more often than not - and we haven't the brass to throw at it any more given FFP. JR will become increasingly frustrated if things continue in the present vein and its hard to see how GB can make a silk purse out of what overall is a sow's ear!

I have said before and I will no doubt say again the squad lacks strength and we simply cannot stop teams when they come at us which teams will always do at some stage of the game. We lack a strong central midfield player and in the absence of this Gary plays Williamson as the extra midfielder which simply does not work, no detriment to Williamson as he tries and puts the effort in, unfortunately he just ain't good enough.

I hope Duffy is the answer at centre back as much as I like Hanley/Baptiste/Kill
gallon we need a bit more height and strength in this league.

The problem we have now is that we are putting pressure on ourselves to win every game at home, the Wigan game is a must win game, they are now playing well and it won't be easy. A defeat and we are in relegation zone!

What a 'opportunity' missed that was.
Not GB's doing of course, but as a club we stalled on the fee. But what size of transfer monies have been grossly squandered since !

Why is it l have lost confidence in Gary Bowyer ? can no-one else see that this team has conceded 10 goals and scored 8 ? it does not take a mathematician to work out that if you take the average over a season this will be mid table mediocrity at best. nice guys don,t win things and Gary Bowyer is too nice and we need someone like a Malky mackay to inject some ruthlessness and The Venkys need to get him in place and give Gary his old job back ,

My sentiments exactly. He also bought Varney to play two up front when needed. GB must agree with us that he has bought a pup with this one because he never plays him even when he has the opportunity to do so. I would like to see another box to box midfielder instead of Williamson and then I think we should have enough players for a promotion push. But the big weakness is GB himself and his solution seems to be if things aren't going well therefore I need another player. I think it is now time for Venkys to make him work with the squad he has already got. He will have no option if a transfer embargo comes in and this may make him blood some of the youngsters of which he has refused to do so far.

We all can Noddy.

There is a declining split percentage wise between those clinging to hope that he finally gets it right, and those suggesting that action needs taking PDQ.

There is no animosity in the latters opinion, but I fear another couple of poor performances and we may well see it rear its ugly head once again.
This borne mainly out of frustration.
