Dan Clough column: Hull City boss Steve Bruce needs to lay off our Jordan Rhodes

Jordan Rhodes has been shown contempt by Steve Bruce, says our columnist

STEVE Bruce and Hull City are showing complete contempt for Rovers with their continued interest in Jordan Rhodes.

On Saturday, in a statement from director of communications Alan Myers, the club finally showed some balls and said no to their approaches.

So for Bruce to come out on the back of that is totally disrespectful.

Sadly, that is what the game has come to these days.

So often the truth is manipulated by certain individuals who twist the national press this way and that to say what they want them to say.

This causes unnecessary hysteria among supporters, even in the face of a clear statement to the contrary.

I was delighted on Saturday afternoon when I saw the statement from the Rovers boardroom.

To me, it shows Venky’s and the board understand the importance of hanging on to our best players if we are to succeed in the long-term.

If they want financial gains, they are only going to get those with the club playing in the Premier League, not the Championship, and we have a chance of getting there with Rhodes in the side.

Many still question our owners, their intentions and their methods, but to me they have shown a big improvement in the past two years.

It is my belief they were very badly advised in the early years of their reign.

Indeed, had they not been advised so poorly, perhaps they wouldn’t have bothered buying the club in the first place.

But recently the day-to-day running of the team and the club has been left to those who know what they are doing.

And a statement like that went a long way to reassure supporters concerned at losing a player without whom our promotion bid would be hugely weakened.

Rhodes himself did the only thing he could do, score the opening goal in Saturday’s win and put in another solid performance.

I don’t think there was anything in Bowyer’s decision to take him off as some people sat close to me in the Blackburn End were suggesting.

He has been subbed in other games this season purely for tactical reasons and, probably, to keep him injury-free.

As for Saturday, it was a slightly disappointing end to a game that at half-time looked to be a comfortable victory.

The stand-out performer for me was Markus Olsson who was rightly awarded man of the match.

He was solid at the back and excellent when pushing forward, showing all the traits of his brother in his prime.

It is reassuring to see such an assured performance from the Swede and it will be interesting to see if he can keep his place once Tommy Spurr returns from injury.

Good article.

I would however say that the media doesn't help, they allow people like Bruce to leak words and phrases that are designed to unsettle the player they are after, the club and the fans.

It doesn't take a genius to work out that Bruce's nose is out of joint (no joke intended) after Venky's slapped him down at the weekend, he is someone who has been used to getting his way all his career as a player and expects the same as a manager.

Hence the spurious article picked up by the Daily Mail which emanates word for word from one paragraph in an article in the Hull Daily Mail.

this is all very good, and it is nice to see the club saying he is not for sale, how true that is only time will tell, but im starting to believe there is more to the venkys than we have seen so far....(I hope) problem is what do we do if Rhodes put a transfer request in? if his head is turned enough or his dad, who works at hull, has a word in his ear?? what do we do then? I personally would let him leave if he expresses a desire to go, I don't want anyone at the club that dosnt want to be there. I just hope he at least gives us to the end of the season.
Failing that who is his replacement?? Nakhi wells?

Agreed, all designed to unsettle the player. Quote Bruce 20 million if he wants him and let him take it from there. I would expect that would be the end of it.
Venkys obviously don't need to sell Rhodes and as he's on a five year contract and stated he will stay as long as he's wanted, they hold all the aces.

Bruce needs to give his oversized, John Merrick style comedy head a wobble.

Typical lack of class from Bruce, no surprise really, you only have to look at the lack of integrity he's displayed throughout his managerial career.

Danny Ings would be a much cheaper option, he's in the last year of his contract and has shown no interest whatsoever in a new contract at Bonleh.

£4mill and he's a tiger.

To put it mildly, you are being very polite. If I should meet Steve Bruce again (I have met him twice in the past), I will tell him upright that I am a Rovers fan and ask him to f*** off. Like what you have mentioned, I will express my disgust and indeed, Rovers should reiterate that Rhodes is not for sale.

With Hull City being the first to place a bid for Rhodes, I can see other clubs trying to do the same in the future if Hull are unsuccessful. This is so disrespectful despite Rovers' statement but sadly, this is what happens in football these days.

I sincerely hope that you are right. All this newspaper talk and speculation is not helping and there were certainly many upset Rovers fans who were waiting for Rhodes after the game on Saturday as though it was the last game of the season, fearing that this could be their last opportunity to see him.

The poor lad looked a bit distressed when he came out and wished that he knew what he was going to be doing next week; however, he told the Rovers fans that he 'does not want to go but that is not up to me'. But being the true professional, Rhodes took the time to sign items and pose for photographs for all those Rovers fans who were waiting for him. I was fortunate that I had a bit more time much earlier that morning to chat with Rhodes and not too long afterwards, Rovers issued the statement that Rhodes is not for sale.

Hull are a small club with no real history, tradition or soul.

Rhodes is better off at Rovers with an improved 5 year deal helping the club reach the Premier League.

He says he's happy to stay unless Rovers sell him. Rovers have said he is not for sale. End of story.

Yes, I've followed your comments on here with interest; some good comments.

This reminds me of the Alan Shearer saga. The national media were desperate - very, very desperate - for him to leave Rovers. They wanted him to sign for Manchester United. Alan Shearer wanted him to sign for Manchester United. Mr Jack Walker had other ideas. The was a concerted systemic media campaign to unsettle Alan Shearer.

This all seems eerily familiar to me. Then, like Jordan this close season, Alan modeled Rovers new kit (a classic kit by the way), reiterated his desire to represent Rovers in it, Season Tickets and replica shirts were sold on the strength of Shearer staying - and then he went.

At no point did Shearer come and and unequivocally say, "I do not want to leave Blackburn Rovers Football Club". That's why i knew, that long summer of '96, he was on his way.

At least Rhodes has said he doesn't want to leave - unless the club want to sell him.

As a Hull fan I totally understand that you do not want to lose your best player but what is all the personal abuse aimed at Steve Bruce and City? All this Hull are a small club with no history nonsense.........no City fan will disagree with that but so what. History is great but means nothing in today's world. These days it is all about been in the Prem and we are there so that makes us a big club whether you like it or not. The lad clearly wants to play in the Prem and City would be a perfect fit. He is clearly not going to go to one of the top clubs as they only buy overseas and he will not play at international level whilst in the Championship. Personally I think we can buy better for that money but do you seriously think Brucey would be wasting his time if there was no chance of him signing.... he would have moved on. JR has recently signed a new contract but do you honestly think his agent will not have negotiated a buy out clause that allows him to speak to PL clubs subject to a bid at a certain level. My guess is that figure is so where near the £12m figure that is being mentioned!

It's only a bit of banter mate. Personally I don't think he'll leave after the statement our owners put out. They are desperately trying to right their monumental wrongs, so to put a statement out like they did on Saturday, then to go and sell Rhodes would be suicidal - even by their previous catastrophic standards. That said, nothing surprises me in football but I reckon Hull will be searching elsewhere on this occasion.

Hull are a small club with no real history, tradition or soul.

Rhodes is better off at Rovers with an improved 5 year deal helping the club reach the Premier League.

He says he's happy to stay unless Rovers sell him. Rovers have said he is not for sale. End of story.

Stop stalking jordan Rhodes. It might increase the chance of staying if freaks like you weren't pretending to meet him all the time
It is a discussion thread on an article about Jordan Rhodes, you weapon.

Thanks Spikey. Can't disagree with you on any of those points, but you do have to admit Mr Bruce's disrespect after Venkys clear statement of intent not to sell him is odious.

I hope as Owd Nick has posted above, that he's got the message and has moved on as it does neither our club or his reputation any favours to continue in this manner.

I have to say, I hope JR sees this as a sign of respect to his both his skills and his worth and neither himself or his agent allows it to go to his head. But sadly I suspect this incident will be used as a leverage further down the line to increase his bank balance by his paternal agent who appears to be more in control of his career and more say about it, than JR himself.

it goes back longer than that. If you recall Bernard Cribbins and Hughes had a public spat over the Robbie Cabbage transfer years ago.

The bent nose wazzack doesn't keep anything under wraps though. He can never wait to start blabbing this and that to the papers. When he worked for Dave Whelan at Wigan you had the two of them at it and it was painful. I bet he was a right tell tale at school. No wonder his nose is smeared across his face!

i like steve bruce - think his reputation is generally unfounded, but the way he has conducted his business in public over jordan is a disgrace. to be honest for once (under this regime) rovers have been exemplary in the manner they have approached the jordan affair

Rhodes should have handed in a transfer request last week.... no one else will offer 10 mil for him and if you dont get promoted(which is no given in the Championship) he will have wasted his best years and never find out if he could cut it at the top level. I dont think he is worth 12 million, we should walk away unless he catagorically says he wants to join us... if he does and you are trying to stop him.... you will have a frustrated player which will get you nowhere....

He wants to Play at the Top Level. we can give
him that, you Cant in a month of sundays.
He would be better of as a Tiger instead of wasting
his best years in the Pub League with you lot
Jawohl mein utter klot !
you were a one hit wonder and have done nothing but go backwards since your Prem league demise..... we on the other hand have created history over the last 10 years and are in a great position to continue making new history. Would rather be where we are than where you are (as would your striker but he´s too much of a nice guy to say it)

Your comment just reminded me of Frank Skinner's impersonation of Colin Hendry on Fantasy Football League (during Euro '96 or France '98, not exactly sure which.) He donned a blond wig then got a sheet of acetate and folded it around his face, thus squishing his nose and lips into Hendry-esque proportions. T'was funny at the time.

As for Hull's continued pursuit of Rhodes, I can understand them wanting to test our resolve, given the seemingly mixed signals they've recieved from our board and our owners. Someone on another site has pointed out that Venky's have said it is not their intention to sell him, not that he's not for sale. It's a very well structured sentence from their point of view as it gives them an 'out' if Rhodes does submit a transfer request, not that I believe he will.

However, Bruce needs to think back to his Sunderland days and how upset he was with Aston Villa over their handling of the Darren Bent transfer. Although they're not exactly the same scenarios - Hull had the decency to contact the club before the player - Bruce admitted that Bent had not been in the right frame of mind for weeks before he left. Yet, here he is, trying to unsettle Rhodes through his public statements of defiance instead of leaving the two boards to conduct their dialogue in private.
