CLASSIC car enthusiasts recreated a once in a life time event at Waddington Fell to mark the centenary of one of the world’s greatest sports cars.

Vintage cars, including more than thirty 30-98 Vauxhalls, marked the car’s debut by taking on a speed hill climb course undertaken exactly 100 years ago.

The 30-98 Vauxhalls first debuted at the same event in 1913. At the time the car won the gold medal after beating all the other sports and racing cars’ fastest times.

Members of the 30-98 Register, Lancashire Automobile Club and the Preston and District Vintage Car Club took part in yesterday’sevent, which saw a wide range of vintage cars take on the course.

Martin Wylie, Chairman of Lancashire Automobile Club, said: “It’s a once in a lifetime event and it really was history in the making.

“It will never happen again in my lifetime and that’s what makes it so special, the fact that we can’t do this every year.

“Looking at the cars, it’s amazing to think that the people who made them might never have thought that they would still be in use today.

“It’s hard to explain how great it was to see all the cars come and take part.

“We tried to create the spirit of the original event and I think we did that.”

Using old photos, the organisers were able to locate the start and finish lines and use them to mirror the race of 1913.

In total around 600 30-98 Vauxhall were manufactured during 14 years of production.

There are believed to be only around 100 30-98 Vauxhalls still in existence.

Chris Lee, chief marshall at the event, said: “It was great to see so many cars there and everyone having a good time.

“Organising it has taken a while because we wanted to get everything right. It only happens once every 100 years after all.

“The whole event was a huge success.”
