MOTORISTS will face traffic delays when a busy bridge is closed for refurbishment.

Work on the new Moorgate Street canal bridge crossing the Leeds-Liverpool Canal in Mill Hill is due to start in January.

The bridge is in a poor condition and has an 18-tonne weight limit, but the new one will not have a limit. Council bosses say the work will take 18 weeks.

The bridge will have to be completely closed because there will not be enough room to allow cars through as the work is carried out. A diversion using the King's Bridge crossing of the canal will be signposted.

A temporary footbridge will be provided for pedestrians and cyclists. The towpath beneath the bridge will also have to be closed between Albion Street and Canal St.

Coun Alan Cottam, Blackburn with Darwen council's member for regen-eration, said: "This work will be completed as soon as possible to keep disruption to a minimum."
