TWO schoolboys and their parents cycled almost 150 miles in three days to raise funds in memory of their grandfather.

Liam Hargreaves, 14, and his brother Ryan, ten, along with their dad Steven and mum Susan, 38, cycled coast to coast at the weekend just two months after Steven's father Jack died of lung cancer.

Between them the two boys, of Oldfield Avenue, Darwen, raised around £400 for Cancer Research. The team raised about £1,500 between them.

Steven, 44, a lecturer at Blackburn College, said his sons' achievements had been remarkable.

He said: "We did some training before but they were amazing.

"The other people with us couldn't believe they kept going.

"We had a van with us so if they had had enough they could go in the van but they just carried on.

"It's such an achievement and I think if my dad could have done it he would have, he was quite active."

Jack Hargreaves from Moss Fold Road in Darwen died aged 68.

He had suffered brain cancer and was in remission but developed lung cancer and died soon after. He was retired but had been managing director of his own company, Vanseal, which provided glazing for static caravans, usually in north Wales.

He was also a member of Darwen Golf Club.

They cycled as a nine-strong group, along with Steven's work colleagues and friends, starting from Whitehaven in Cumbria at 9am on Saturday and cycled 57 miles to Penrith on the first day.

They rode 40 miles the next day to Allenheads and finally 50 miles on the last day reaching their final destination of Sunderland at 6pm on Monday, four hours late due to poor weather.

Liam, who attends St Wilfrid's school in Blackburn, and Ryan, who attends Avondale Primary School in Darwen, raised the sponsorship money at school.

Mr Hargreaves added: "They are really happy they've done it and I'm really proud of them."
