A GIANT toy penguin was stolen in a bizarre raid on a supermarket.

The model of Mumble, the lead character in the animated film Happy Feet, was snatched from Asda in Blackburn.

Three teenage girls were caught on CCTV browsing before making their move for the 6ft 6in Mumble.

They dragged it through the car park around 3pm on Saturday and into a blue van which was parked near taxi bays.

Despite the size of Mumble, staff did not realise it had been stolen until Monday.

Police have launched what will be one of their strangest investigations.

Mumble had been raffled off and the winner had decided to donate it to Newfield Special School, Blackburn.

Security guard Tim Larner, said: "The footage shows three girls enter the shop and head towards the sandwiches when two break off and grab Mumble's hand and start to drag it away.

"They appear to have some kind of debate over whether to take it or not while still in the foyer before running off.

"They dragged it all the way across the car park before loading it into a van with three males."

Jim Slater, event co-ordinator, said: "I felt sick as a parrot when I heard what had happened.

"I'd like to see it back. It has no monetary value but it would have been of great value to the school and the children who attend."

A police spokeswoman said: "Inquiries are ongoing. I would encourage anyone with information to help us identify those responsible to contact the police."
