HOLIDAYMAKERS and backpackers from Lancashire are being urged to sign up to a new service that will help them stay in touch with family in the event of a crisis abroad.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) today (Fri) launches LOCATE, a system which registers details of people going on a foreign trip, as well as an emergency friend and family contact details.
It is a two-way service, and in the event of an emergency worried family members can register details of a loved one who may be caught up in the incident.
If the traveller also confirms with the FCO that they are well, LOCATE will match the two bits of information and the news can be quickly passed to relatives.
The service has been launched after a survey found that over half of travellers from the North West go abroad without leaving details of their trip.
Visit www.fco.gov.uk and click on the LOCATE icon.
