Campaign bid to halt mobile phone mast near Baxenden school (From Blackburn Citizen)

I think that if you have a mobile phone, particularly in this case of the 2 networks mentioned, you have any right to complain.

Usually against "NIMBY's", however this is ridiculously close to the school.

Until it can be categorically proved that these masts are harmless, don't risk kids health.

Councillor Hurn and Pratt need to get a life. At the end of the day mobile telephones appear to be a necessity of everyday life. Has it been proven that having masts so near to a school can cause any ill effects. Maybe Hurn and Pratt need to focus their attention to the congregation of youngsters that cause havoc at the end of Southwood Drive each evening and find something for them to do in Baxenden as opposed to trying to find somewhere else for a mobile telephone mast. If Baxenden Conservative Club are paid a rent for the mast so be it, this will assist in the Club remaining active during these times of struggle. And where has 3000 letters of objection come from may I ask. Knowing people in Baxenden they are good at talking but never put anything to plan or has someone written the letters on their behalf. If it was upto Hurn and Pratt Baxenden and its amenaties will not move forward with the times. At the end of the day look what happend with the old folks home on Manchester Road planning permission refused, and why because some locals feel that it will impact on their community. Well continue and lets see what happens to the home. Let it just fall into to ruin and be a blot on the landscape for years to come. Pratt by name PRATT by nature...........bri

Anyway as I was saying about mobile phones, children are alot safer at school with a mobile mast near their school than they are with their parents and gaurdians. Agree mobiles are a neccessity, however don't mount the antenae near schools / playgrounds / homes etc. where people are likely to be exposed to the continuous strong signals. The masts are obviously of "industrial strength" and cannot be compared to a TV remote etc. Does your TV remote work through walls? What is it's range? Mobile signals will carry several miles and transmit through walls -immature comparissons have been made by some posters.

Just stick 'em out the way - common sense really.

The main issue with all yhis microwave tech is the frequency at which it operates, it is the same as that of the brain, thus it has an effect regardless of wether we feel it or not.

Microwave ovens were invented in Russia....they are banned in Russia....

Microwaves of any sort seem not to do living cells any good whatever.

Its a choice of course. but somethings are not the same as they were 20 years ago, the people are not the same and in plain sight in a similar timespan came the mobile networks.

The main concern that people have regarding these towers is the electro-magnetic radiation that is emitted from them, which is more concentrated within a short distance from the point of origin. The exact point is a variable of it's output energy and the wavelength of the signal.
Having worked on transmitters and receiver systems in the past, I may be considered utterly insane by suggesting that the tower be mounted on the top of the school rather than the suggested site.
This is based upon a knowledge of how a signal propogated from the tower creates a null or 'dead spot' directly beneath it. This area can be extended somewhat by adding ground planes to the mast, whilst not affecting the primary signal significantly.

If the European Parliament voted in Sept 2008 to urge Ministers of member states to restrict the use of both mobile and cordless telephones by people under the age of 25 based upon Swedish research that exposed the risks of brain damage by glia and other tumours associated with thier usage, therefore it makes no sense whatsoever to expose children to a vastly increased order of magnitude by placing this mast with yards of a school.

Until more evidence is gathered to show what long-term effects exist, we should be more inclined to err on the side of caution.

I first learnt about cancer risk from mobile phones back in the 1990s when numerous sales reps we knew were were suddenly being hospitalised diagnosed with tumours on the brain - all had been given a mobile phone by their employers. We didn't know it at the time but they were microwaving their brains. A few years later the Blair government were advising people to keep mobile phone conversations short.

The problem with the radiation beams from masts is that they penetrate into homes. We're all vulnerable when we sleep but a child is especially sensitive to being baked by microwaves.

Per the Times in 2007: One of the studies, in Warwickshire, showed a cluster of 31 cancers around a single street. A quarter of the 30 staff at a special school within sight of the 90ft high mast have developed tumours since 2000, while another quarter have suffered significant health problems.

You will appreciate that thro' personal experience already quoted, I changed my mind about having a mobile phone back in the 1990s and thus now only have a landline. My children and grandchildren use their mobiles for tweeting only, although I would think mobiles are ok for short conversations. Mobile mast engineers I've spoken with have said that it's safe directly underneath their masts.

Good on you wrinkles for having the courage of your convictions and not using a mobile. If everyone who objected did the same, maybe we wouldn't need a mast in the area!
