New Accrington police station could be built by proposed mosque

A NEW police station in Accrington could be built on land next to a proposed £4million mosque.

Lancashire Police are keen to move from its current Grade-II listed Accrington Road building which is costing the force money to maintain.

A £1.5million move to a new building was put on hold last year pending the organisational reviews into frontline policing.

Then provisional plans to rent a property called Castle House adjacent to the existing site were submitted to the council.

It is on police owned land and was formerly the road policing unit. Lancashire Police Authority was told that plan would be ‘cost neutral’.

Now an alternative option has been added to the equation, with Hyndburn Council saying the police have made inquiries about land between Steiner Street, Portland Street and Frederick Street, off Hyndburn Road in west Accrington.

Part of the land is earmarked for a mosque for 2,500 worshippers. The police station would be built next door to it.

Central ward Coun Allah Dad said: “This land was reserved for a mosque. The committee and the community still want it there and there is a demand and a need for it.

“It was promised in 2009, the funding is there, but there have been delays. I think this is down to a lack of communication and a change in council control.

“We are waiting for an agreement to be put in place and I’m going to try and make sure it happens.

“We have only just found about the possible plans for a police station. People don’t want it there and we will campaign strongly against this. We are not against a police station, just the location. This land is reserved for the mosque.”

Chief Insp Julian Platt said the site was one of a number of different location being considered.

He said: “We are looking for the most suitable site which allows us to best serve the communities of Hyndburn.”

A final decision will be made by Lancashire Police Authority.

Why has this land been 'Reserved' in the first place?
.
If they can spend £4 million building something why not purchase the land it is going to be sited on as well?
.
If i want to build a house i have to buy the land first. Why should this be any different?

I'm confused! It says the station will be on land next to the Mosque so it doesn't seem like a case of one or the other. Why would anyone not want a Police station near by? They'll be the first to complain when they don't get an instant response to something.

Who are you trying to fool? Police land is Govt' land ie Council land.
Really does the country let alone the county NEED more mosques?
When are you people going to grow a backbone and say NO!!

No, it isn't fair, you are spot on with your comment. It is about time they were told enough is enough.
A police station is more important than yet another mosque.

Numbers published by the Muslim community show that a 2,500 capacity mosque far exceeds requirements. I would say to Mr. Dad that his job as a councillor is to find ways of bringing more council tax paying businesses into Hyndburn and finding the land for the 10,000 houses which we were told were needed in the 1990's and which will also bring in council tax revenue into Hyndburn's coffers.

We residents pay far too much council tax as it is without having to give up a large plot of land which will not pay council tax if yet another religious edifice is built on it. There used to be houses and factories on that land - what are Hyndburn doing to replace the commercial and industrial aspects which Accrington and district once had?

Has planning permission for this mosque been granted yet? As far as people have been told from the council, no planning permission has been granted yet Cllr Dad is saying the land is reserved????
This should be put to public vote, also the wider area, not just the area surrounding the mosque. I mean come on how many mosques does such a small town need? I know of at least 8 now, with one in the process of expansion. WAKE UP ACCRINGTON!!!!!

People do have voices and they use them. However Blackburn's planning committee ignore the voices of not only the people but the experts too. They pass applications recommended for rejection.

I am mindful of news reports and TV documentaries on how the I.F.E (Islamic Forum Europe)planned to take over councils via planning committees.

At that time Tower Hamlets and Bradford were cited. One would be forgiven for thinking Blackburn too given its perverse planning decisions.

My first concern would be for Matalan and Asda. Their custom would go elsewhere as a number of motorists who fail to adhere to road safety rules such as wearing seat belts e.t.c would go elsewhere. My second concern is that a police station, if requires relocation, should be more central e.g globe centre area. We definitley don't want the absence of a police station in Accrington, but Hyndburn Rd suggests a quicker route to Blackburn, I ask myself why? When the police should serving all residents of Hyndburn hence should be in the centre of Accrington. If the police are desperate for a station on the Hyndburn Rd area, why not the clock BMW garage or better still on the land where the old Central Car Sales forecourt is where they could have ample space for a high tech station as well as parking. If funds are short, the council should fully support as a police station in Accrington is a necessity and more so judging by the comments regarding this article. Community Cohesion needs improving as Islamophobia seems on the increase. Finally, Accrington should welcome any proposal of any building that serves any proportion of any community whether it is a Mosque, Police Station, Church, Temple, Synagogue or a community centre.

you are perhaps a good example of what is wrong in the Moslem communities in this country.

you need to catch up here, the ongoing issue in this country for the 66 or so million non-Moslems, is, what are we to do about a minority being given green lights by succesive governments who are hell bent on forming civil unrest in order they can close the country down under martial law today known as contingency and resillience.

The question is expanded thus, how do we scupper this move given almost all Moslems in Britain are so ignorant to how the west operates, they are falling for the game of those successive governments by demanding rights and speaking against the nation they live in while expecting to recieve a warm reception by the natives to their concerns about their rights without any thought for the rights of the ludicrously large majority given they are guests here.

Savvy up to how in the west we are swathed by propoganda, no longer the propoganda of the scriptures, but the propoganda of what their own eyes see via the almighty TV... and when that almighty TV shows pictures of Moslems fireing weapons and screaming anti west slogans, then by definition of ignorance, mosques take on a new meaning.

Accrington does not need a mosque, so forgive me not welcoming the building of the mosque. What we need is investment into people not investment into corporate. The powers that be don't want you to see this so they keep you busy demanding £4 million mosques and the natives busy being repulsed by those calls.

Wake up and cease in this seperatism, or the only result will be the ceation of seperatist communities in Britain

I think from a rational point of view - first come first served policy!

Has anyone from the mosque or local community rejected the idea of building a police station nearby?

Do we need a fancy new police station as whitebirk is just 5 minutes away?

I think if a community want to invest £4mil back into the community its actually a positive! - it seems like alot of foriegners are investing in uk, what about the indiginous population??

I think the usual anti islam/immigrants types need to realise that they actually contributing to UK and not sponging

Wow! It amazes me how a simple story regarding the replacement of an old mosque which is too small to serve the community. To be replaced with a larger building which would serve the whole commnity, yes whole community as a community centre is also proposed works some people into a frenzy on how the country which is a secular state is going to be over run and taken over by a small minority. It is amazing how the fickle minded are swayed by media propoganda. Will the same issues arise when the proposed extension of Nelson mosque takes place.

The mosque and police station will both get built, what we all need to focus on is how different communities can live happily together like we have been doing over the past decades.

Although this article is specific to proposals for a ‘Police Station next to a mosque’, I feel it necessary to address some of the concerns by people on here opposing the building of a mosque. I have no issue with this but to negatively loom this proposal, with a grievance-based approach, concerns me somewhat! The Mosque is anticipated by council in exchange for 3 buildings which have over the years led to community cohesion but yet at the same time may have caused unintentional inconvenience to people parking around the Portland Community Centre, Islamic Centre on Blackburn rd as well as the Grimshaw st mosque. It only therefore makes sense to consolidate all of the above for a more organized area. So in response to people saying that this is becoming like Blackburn, quite the opposite, we want to unify the different establishments into to just one Central Mosque!

All the claims that "we don't need another mosque" are based on ‘what research’ or ‘understanding?’ What problem would it cause anyone? Sorry there is no need to have a complex we only want to pray and serve the community. A place from which we can engage with dealing with problems of drugs, teenage pregnancies, binge drinking amongst the youth as well as anti social behaviour that has plagued this nation. The police station is a last resort to the problems that people face in society. The promotion of values that push a responsibility to the community should be at the center of our affairs. Hence the detachment required from the police station

Also do we remember the peace walk a few years ago from the church to the mosque, promoting a unified community around 250-300 visitors from the community came to the mosque to eat together and actively discuss positive differences!

Muslims in this country have no interest in taking over the country (contrary to the xenophobic perception) hence the lack of interest in walking the corridors of power in parliament. We as Muslims have a genuine concern for humanity and Islamic politics means ‘to look after the affairs of people’ without a career in it like many politicians. We do not need money to help people and the monies raised for the project would not burden the government what so ever, as it would come from the community itself!

A mosque at the heart of the community would do exactly this. We would open our doors and hearts, so that the wider society can see for themselves what we are all about, instead of the onslaught people have fallen victim to over the last decade or so! We as a community have too been affected by the culture the resides around us and our youth have also been affected by the culture of drugs, alcohol, partying & binge drinking, we too have been affected by the recession and increase of taxes imposed by the government! It would be ludicrous to imply that Muslims are responsible for all of the issues stated. Rather we are part of the community and we feel what everyone else in society feels. It's about time that the wider society gave us a chance to assist in dealing with the problems of this society, our society!

Just to conclude. I appreciate the concern that people have, objecting to a proposed mosque as for some reason you feel that it would do more damage to an already damaged Britain but quite the contrary. This article is about a ‘proposed police station next to the mosque’ and I feel that the mosques objective of dealing with social, moral, spiritual and cultural issues would be compromised if the two where bought together! The police station should be separate from all spiritual centres as both have totally varying approaches to the problems of society

As for disastrous reality of churches being burnt in Pakistan ... Please don't even get me started on British foreign policies that have led to the turmoil around the world, supporting dictators like karimov, Husni Mubarak, the initial set up of Saddam, Musharaf in Pakistan, Asad in Syria and even back hand deals with Gaddaffi…I think this is another discussion for another day.. The Christians in Pakistan are brown skinned Pakistanis and I think the Pakistani government are responsible for the security of their own people just as it is the responsibility of the government to ensure the safety and well being of all those that pay taxes in this country!

Sorry to go on a bit but these are the sort of misconception that fuel differences between people in our community of Accrington, who are all the same when you look beneath the surface of skin

Hope my lengthy contribution adds value to the debate not further problems. I hope we can support one another in an amicable way, my apologies if I have without intention offended anyone

BEFORE ANY REPRESENTATIVES SPOUT OUT TO THE PRESS I SUGGEST YOU GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT.
In early 2009, the initial consultation process was flawed. HBC planned one half day open meeting, not publicised widely across West Accrington or Hyndburn. After complaints a standalone display with incorrect dates, Easter time! Flyers were hastily delivered within West Accrington by officers of the council! The plans presented at the open meeting showed a capacity of 500.

Some feedback comments were clearly in same handwriting or photocopies. The stats do not add up.

6th June 2009, HBC Cabinet meeting considered the comments and gave initial council backing for the building of a mosque at the Hyndburn Road gateway into Accrington. HBC documents clearly show Capacity 500. A report from that meeting proves that HBC have agreed to a further full consultation process PRIOR to any planning application for a submission of a planning application.

From 2009 to date the capacity has increased to 2,500.

On 29th August 2011 Tariq Ali, chairman of West Accrington Resident’s Association (INCIDENTALLY THIS NO LONGER EXISTS; accurate minutes and meetings are not forthcoming and the then secretary, Joan Pilkington has publicly said that WARA has folded). Tariq said the new mosque plans were likely to be smaller, to hold 1000 worshippers, depending on council guidance.
Also interesting, recently C.Cllr Younis has awarded WARA £120. What for?

Tariq says the original plan was for a £4million mosque for 2,500 worshippers, to replace two Accrington mosques demolished as part of renewal schemes. Tariq Ali, Get your facts right.

Leader of the council Miles Parkinson said: “The progress along the Blackburn Road corridor has been amazing recently.
“The idea for the mosque in this part of town has been proposed by members of the community in the past.
“If the plans and finances are ready on their part then our council officers will be able to advise preparation for a planning application.” GET YOUR FACTS Right miles! You have inherited this from Cllr Britcliffe. It was agreed in June 2009. HBC have agreed to a further full consultation process PRIOR to any planning application for a submission of a planning application.

January 2012, Allah Dad is in the press. Yet again the capacity has changed. Mr David Wesley failed to mention the agreed a further full consultation process PRIOR to any planning application for a submission of a planning application. Now I intend campaigning that this full and proper consultation process should be across Hyndburn as Hyndburn road is the gateway to Accrington. As such, any development should reflect all citizens. As for bringing money into Accrington – get your facts right – Mosques do not pay community charge. Any building work or supplies cannot be guaranteed to be supplied by local traders.
Community Centre within Mosque– get your facts right – the Community Advice Centre on Hannah Street is for Asian people. It has recently received three years funding from HBC.
