THE prime minister has said one of his favourite moments in power was visiting an Accrington brickworks.

David Cameron made the declaration just weeks after he re-started the production line at Hanson Building Products during a visit to East Lancashire.

But the top Tory mistakenly claimed he flicked the ‘on’ switch for the first time in seven years – because his visit came hours after the mayor of Hyndburn also pushed the ‘on’ button.

Writing on Facebook, Mr Cameron said: “One of my favourite moments of the past five years was at a brick factory in Accrington.

“The production line had ground to a halt at the height of the Great Recession, and all the staff had been made redundant, save two, who had stayed to look after the machines for when – and if – they started up again.

“There I was, pushing the ‘on’ button and, for the first time in seven years, the kilns lit up, the cogs cranked into action – and the town was making bricks once again.

“More to the point, people who had lost jobs and struggled with part-time work had got back those full-time, properly-paid jobs.”

But Councillor Munsif Dad said: “We both attended it. I attended in the morning and David Cameron attended in the afternoon.

“We were both given the opportunity to start the factory up.

The firm obviously respects both of us as mayor and as prime minister.

“I was privileged and honoured to be invited.”
