A CAMPAIGN launched to warn motorists about the fatal dangers of drink-driving will come to Accrington today. (MON)

The twisted wreckage of Matthew Alston’s car will be outside Marks and Spencers, in Broadway, while Daniel Birch’s trailer will be there tomorrow.

Police officers will be talking to shoppers about the risk of drink-driving as part of Wasted Lives, which has been working with the pair’s families.

MORE TOP STORIES:

Matthew was killed on a Saturday morning in August 2010, in Read. He was over the drink-drive limit the morning after drinking alcohol at a party at home.

Police said Matthew’s story was a devastating reminder that people can still be over the drink-drive limit the morning after.

Daniel was 23 years old when he was killed on March 18, 2012, at approximately 4am near his home in Coppull.

He was driving home after a night out when he lost control and hit a gate post while almost three times over the legal drink-drive limit.

One unit of alcohol takes approximately one hour to leave the body, so a night out could leave somebody with alcohol in their body for more than 24 hours.

Chief Inspector Richard Blackburn said: “Daniel and Matthew’s stories highlight the most tragic consequences of drink-driving. Their families have been left devastated but are keen to educate people about the dangers.”

A police spokesman added: “This project is all about improving people’s ability to assess risks, making them, and make the right decisions and accept responsibility for their actions as drivers and passengers.”
