POLICE cordoned off a section of Peel Park in Accrington to investigate reports of an attempted rape at the weekend.

Specialist crime scene investigators were called to the Avenue Parade entrance to the park on Saturday to scour for vital clues.

Officers had received a report of a suspected attack by a man on a 17-year-old girl, who was walking alone, at around midnight on Friday.

An investigation was launched and remains ongoing, while patrols were stepped up. Undercover officers were also drafted in.

DCI Jon Holmes, from the Force Major Investigation Team, said: "We have a dedicated team of officers investigating this incident and I would urge anyone who was in the Avenue Parade and Peel Park area at around midnight on Friday, December 12 to come forward and contact us.

"Any information you may hold could be vital to the investigation."
