They arrived to find a man who was burning household waste in a brazier in his back garden.

The crew spent 20 minutes putting the fire out because of the fumes it was producing.

Then, at 1.50am the following morning, the crew was then called to a kitchen fire at a home in Bradford Street.

A woman had left a toaster unattended and the device caught fire, causing severe damage to a kitchen work surface.

Firefighters spent 45 minutes making the kitchen safe and praised the occupant for alerting them to the fire in time for them to get it under control.

Watch manager Lee Cook said: “In the first incident we gave advice to the gentleman about not burning waste – other than garden waste – near his property.

“In the kitchen fire, the woman did right thing by isolating the power and calling us.

“That’s what we tell people to do.

“Thankfully no-one was injured in either incident.”
