A GRIEVING wife has called for double yellow lines to be painted on the stretch of road where her husband was hit by a car.

William Hart lost his nine-week battle for survival last month having been hit by a Ford Fiesta as he tried to cross Whalley Road, Clayton-le-Moors, on June 21.

The retired lorry driver had been crossing the road between two parked cars after a night of dancing at Clayton Conservative Club.

The club is close to a bridge over the Leeds and Liverpool Canal and concerns have been raised that, because of the brow in the road, drivers can’t see properly what is on the other side.

His widow, Ann, has called for yellow lines to be painted.

She said: “Something needs to be done to stop people from parking there.

“That is why my husband got hurt. The driver could not see him.

“It is a silly place to park, right at the top of a hill and it must be stopped.”

Clayton-le-Moors councillor Tim O’Kane has also called on Lancashire County Council to act.

He said: “As Mr Hart was having to cross from behind the parked cars, the driver could not see him properly.

“I find it sad that when it came to the funeral, there were still cars parked outside.

“It is just common sense really. If people are coming over that hill they won’t be able to see what is on the other side.

“I think it would be much better if double yellow lines were painted on both sides to stop people from parking there permanently.”

Ray Bennett, Lancashire County Council’s principal engineer for Hyndburn, said: “Our condolences go out to Mr Hart’s family following this incident.

“We are unaware of any specific highway issues relating to this tragic incident. However, we will be speaking with the police regarding the circumstances and we’re planning to visit the site with them to see if any action needs to be carried out to improve road safety on Whalley Road.”
