A COURAGEOUS teenager with cerebral palsy will put his difficulties aside to tackle a lengthy charity walk.

Lewis Baker-Vose, from Oswaldtwistle, will take on the 10k Big Charity Walk in his wheelchair alongside carer, Colin.

The 17-year-old will be raising memory for the East Lancashire Hospice in memory of his grandmother Ruth, who died six years ago.

Proud mum Sharon, of Highfield Close, Oswaldtwistle, said: “He can walk a little bit with a frame but the ground has to be level and someone always has to be with him.

“He is an active youngster, doing swimming and horse riding, so a sponsored walk does not faze him.”

It will be the fourth walk the teen has completed. In May 2011, the Lancashire Telegraph told how Lewis raised £300 after completing a seven-mile walk.

Lewis’ grandmother Ruth suffered from breast and lung cancer and attended day therapy sessions at the hospice in Park Lee Road, Blackburn.

Speaking at the time, Sharon said: “The hospice said it’s hard enough for people who are physically able to raise money and to see Lewis do it was a big thing for everybody there.”

The walk, on Sunday, May 18, has been organised by the Rotary Club of Church and Oswaldtwistle, and Lewis has just returned from a seven-day stay at the Rotary-sponsored Calvert Trust, which challenges disability through outdoor activities in the Lake District.

Walk organiser Ron Pickup said: “The Rotary Club is very pleased Lewis has registered. He is a very brave young person who will be taking part in his fourth walk, having raised more than £1,000 for the hospice.

“Hopefully, we will get another big turnout from the public for this prestigious walk, which can raise more than £25,000 for charities and good causes.”
