A PROJECT in which children plant trees at schools across Hyndburn has been hailed a success.

The Big Tree Plant resulted in almost 400 native and fruit trees being planted.

Sheila McVan, secretary for project organisers Hyndburn Tree Wardens, said: “It is hoped children will learn to look after these trees and benefit from the fruit some will produce.”

The project involved several organisations, including community group Woody, United Utilities and Hyndburn Borough Council.

Chair of Hyndburn Tree Wardens, Jane Eccles, said: “The project uses native trees sourced from local nurseries, and we have done a lot of groundwork with the schools to supplement their ongoing veg growing projects, providing fruit trees as well as other species.”
