Former Hyndburn teacher launches business to show people how to make clothes
8:00am Friday 16th August 2013 in Hyndburn
A FORMER art and textiles teacher has launched her own business teaching people to sew and make their own clothes across the Hyndburn and Blackburn area.
Helen Jones’ company, It’s Sew Easy, will run a variety of courses at different venues and for all skill levels. The 45-year-old said: “Some will be for beginners who don’t yet know how to use a sewing machine. Some will be more advanced courses for those with more knowledge.
“As well as offering courses I will be hosting Sew Social events for the local communities, and my pilot event is a Sew Supper, in conjunction with the vegetarian Sprout Cafe, in Blackburn.”
Helen lives in Rishton, but was raised in Great Harwood, where she often helped out at her mum’s shop, It’s Sew Easy.
She said: “I worked in the shop on a Saturday and during the school holidays. The shop is not there now, but my mother, Annie Gray, has played an instrumental part in the planning of ideas for this new venture.”
Helen hopes to widen the choice of courses to appeal to different people once her business is established.
She added: “Courses that use recycled materials and ‘up-cycling’ are trends that appeal to many people with an interest in ethical products.
“The recent controversies and news coverage of large companies exploiting foreign workers and the dangerous conditions in which they work has heightened the public’s awareness of the problems caused by buying the same cheap clothes as everyone else.
“These courses offer people the chance to become individuals again.”
It’s Sew Easy’s funding has come from Helen’s family, and Bank of Dave, in Burnley, and its equipment is being supplied by Hobkirk at Blackburn.
A full list of courses on offer can be seen online at www.itsseweasy.co.uk Participants at the company’s event, at Sprout Cafe, on August 27, will complete a simple project. The cost is £25 and the materials and supper are included in the price. The session runs from 6pm to 9pm.
