Benefits plan will harm working people, warns Hyndburn MP

AN MP says he has concerns that a government benefits plan will affect working people.

Hyndburn MP Graham Jones said he backs attempts to attack the dependency culture, but criticised the government’s Benefits Uprating Bill as an attack on those with jobs.

He said: “The Chancellor is using the sincere concerns of the public to implement policies that will harm people who do not deserve it. For instance, around two-thirds of those who will lose out are working.

“Moreover, the Child Poverty Action Group estimates that the Bill will add 200,000 to the number of children living in poverty in the UK by 2015. My concern for Hyndburn is that we have the second-highest number of people living on the breadline in the UK. The effect on people’s lives is an afterthought.”
