Darwen recruiting a new town crier
6:30pm Tuesday 31st July 2012 in Darwen
LETTER Coun Anthony Meleady
THE future of Darwen’s town crier has been clarified.
Last week confusion reigned after members of the Darwen Research Group, which is in charge of the role, said Coun Anthony Meleady had verbally resigned prior to Friday’s Olympic bell ringing event.
But Coun Meleady hit back, saying he had only said he didn’t want to look after the uniform any more.
Yesterday, Dot Waring of the research group, said that a final decision had been reached.
She said: “A letter has been sent to Councillor Meleady by our secretary, saying that we accept his resignation.
“We will now be going through the proper routes to recruit a new town crier.”

Give it to Paul Bronwe the voice of Darwen.
PB would look like one of santa's little helpers in that get up!
Typical darwen, some things never change. Now let's go to the pub!

Mrs. Waring. Did you resign from Darwen Historical Society in December 2009 saying "But now it’s time for me to walk away"?
Woman. Its a four year old suit of clothes, made for a man who has done a lot for Darwen as town crier, without remuneration. Take the suit back if you will, bit I'll tell you something. You'll never get a man to fill Mr Meleady's shoes in this job, let alone the suit.
Get a life.

The Local History Society didn't purchase the Town Crier Outfit, this was hand crafted by Dot Waring of Darwen Research Group. The History Group have had no input into the Town Crier. Darwen Research Group also purchased the hat and commissioned the replica bell. Darwen Research Group own the outfit and the bell.
At Mr Meleady's request, the town council took over the booking of engagements.
Dot has a life, and snide comments will not affect her. I am not afraid of giving my name at the end of this comment but everyone else wants to hide behind non de plumes. Pauline Hodkinson

The uniform fell to Darwen Research Group who relinquished the responsibility for engagements by the Crier to Darwen Town Council at the end of 2011.
Darwen Research Group fall out with the Town Crier and accept his resignation which, he alleges was never offered in the first place.
One would hope that Darwen Town Council will distance itself completely from the debacle.
And by the way Mr Meleady is no longer a councillor as he stepped down in May. However, he has volunteered his time in this role since it's inception and should be appreciated as such.
The common denominator in this seems to be Mrs Waring.
