Row over Darwen pothole repairs schedule

THE deputy leader of Blackburn with Darwen Council has come under criticism for claiming to have brought roadworks forward by over a year.

Coun Tony Melia said that because of his constant nagging at Capita, pothole repairs scheduled for the end of 2010 and beginning of 2011 in Inverness Road, Manor Road and Borough Road would be completed by the end of this month.

But town councillor Dave Smith said he had a recent conversation with an officer at Capita and was told that surface dressing of Manor Road had actually been delayed, not brought forward.

Coun Smith said: “You would have thought that the deputy leader of the council would know these details.”

Coun Dave Hollings also confirmed that the work was originally in the 2009 schedule and accused Coun Melia of “spinning”.

Conservative councillor John Slater said he was “flabbergasted” by Coun Melia’s claims.

He said: “Ward councillors work hard to get improvements and to get work done.

“For Tony Melia to claim credit for this is a scandal.

“If a UFO landed in Darwen, the For Darwen Party would try to claim credit for it.”

What is the problem? no one surely believes a word he or his party say! Well apart from the morons (sorry but you are!) who voted for a town council. Excused re the hype when they started as local mp's but come on.........

I can't disagree with anything said by CBH on this issue! FDP have done NOTHING for the town, and I doubt they ever will. Therefore, the only way to get in the paper is to indulge in a little good, old-fashioned plagiarism! Unfortunately, it's back-fired on him (like the super stadium did!) because there are effective Councillors out there who actually know what is going on!

It’s a real sad and sorry state of affairs isn’t it? When in this day and age with all the modern technology not to mention numerous multi- million pound projects going on in Blackburn & Darwen the powers that be cannot get some decent tar laid on our roads. Pathetic! It’s not rocket science and the Romans were doing this 100s of years ago and making a far better job of it.

Who cares if they have brought them forward, they are desperately needing doing, only thing is they repair them and then within a few weeks they are just as bad!
.
We live on Borough Road and the road is a disgrace, as well as Manor Road!
.
I for one did NOT vote for a town council, they are just a lot of money wasting clowns!

If anyone is in any doubt as to the state of the roads you simply need to look here.

I agree that many of the roads are a disgrace. But, unfortunately, people in Darwen don't see spending on roads as a particular priority ! That's because the last Labour council budget proposals (including an extra £500k for road resurfacing) was voted down by the 'coalition' councillors voted in by the public ! But that's democracy.
