COUNCIL bosses are to install a shutter on the inside of a window at Darwen Market to prevent break-ins.

Last week, the Lancashire Telegraph reported a police investigation had been launched after thieves caused damage and stole stock from the market, causing a delay in opening to customers the following day.

And now, management has confirmed a shutter will be installed in a bid to stop it happening again.

Darwen Market manager Gwen Sangster said: “ There had been some concerns about the appearance, which is why we are putting it on the inside.

“This means we can maintain the historic appearance of the market but also improve security.”

Conservative candidate at May’s General Election Jake Berry had called for the added security after hearing of the break-ins last week.

He said: “One of the great privileges of having been the MP for this town is the close relationship I have with all of our local businesses.

“It has been a real pleasure to work with the local traders to make sure the market is secured. They have a right to carry on their business without the fear of having their livelihood stolen away from them.”
