TALK about running riot, these Darwen youngsters have taken control of The Mall.

PUPILS at St Edward’s RC Primary School took part in a national initiative to give children an insight into the working world.

The scheme backed by the Office of the Children’s Commissioner, gave the 10 and 11-year-olds the chance to shadow professionals and see what is involved in the day to day running of the Blackburn shopping centre.

The Mall, general manager Loraine Jones said: “The whole day went exceptionally well.

“This is great for the kids involved as we have been able to offer a look behind the scenes, this is their learning stage so I am glad we have been able to help.

“This is the first time we have got involved with this fantastic initiative and I couldn’t be more thrilled to be giving these youngsters this invaluable, unique experience.

“This is brilliant for our community.”

The Year 6 youngsters gave the day the thumbs up after learning the ropes alongside the management, marketing and security teams.

Pupil Leah Kelly, 11, said: “I liked everything about the day, I am really glad they invited us.

“I learnt so much about The Mall, I never knew that there was a department underground for every store.”

Ten-year-old aspiring footballer, Eric Strzalacki said: “My best part about the day was working with the security.

“We looked at the CCTV and watched everybody in The Mall without them knowing. It was really exciting.”

Deputy headteacher at the Blackburn Road school, Cath Kippax said: “We was invited along with our year six and was thrilled.

“It is great for the children to see how the ball rolls. Everybody has had a wonderful time.”
