A LETTER from the town of Darwen expressing sadness and outrage at the assassination of Abraham Lincoln will feature in an exhibition marking the 150th anniversary of the US Civil War President’s death.
Town Mayor Trevor Maxfield was amazed to receive a letter from the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum in Springfield, Illinois, informing him of the the message and its display.

He is writing a modern counterpart to join the letter from Justice of the Peace and chairman of the then civil parish of Darwen Ralph Shorrock in 1865.
The two documents will also be featured in a digital exhibition available online worldwide.
Earcroft councillor Maxfield said: “I was surprised and delighted to receive the letter from the Presidential Library. It shows the town playing its part in international history.
“I have asked the Friends of Darwen Library to research the letter.”
