She said she was most disappointed at missing a meeting of Blackburn with Darwen Council for the first time in 23 years.

Coun Foster said she and her husband David, also a Whitehall ward councillor, arranged their holidays so they won't miss full council meetings.

But because she was unwell, Coun Foster was unable to attend the full council forum at Blackburn Town Hall on Thursday night.

However on Sunday, she felt well enough to join her husband and brother-in-law in Darwen town centre for the Remembrance service in the Market Square and wreath-laying at the Boer War Memorial.

She also went to the Friends of Darwen Cemetery's Remembrance service at the Cross of Sacrifice, close to the cemetery entrance.

She said: "I will try to take it easy for a little while."

Coun Foster was first elected in Whitehall in May 1992, and has successfully fought the following six elections, the most recent being in 2012.

Her long career within the council chamber was rewarded when she was given her mayoral year in 2011 to 2012.
