A DARWEN singer wondered ‘What’s Going On?’ after the wife of Motown legend Marvin Gaye praised his rendition of a classic song.

Paul Stuart Davies uploaded a video of himself singing the 1973 classic Let’s Get It On to social networking sites YouTube and Facebook.

And he was stunned when Janis Gaye, the soul legend’s second wife and mother of his two children Frankie and Nona, took to Facebook to pay tribute to his efforts.

Commenting on the videos, she said: “Paul, you caught me off guard. I love your voice and love the way you did Let’s Get It On. You got soul, baby!”

She then added: “Love it when an artist does MG’s music well. Very nice. Indeed a great job.”

She then shared the video on her own Facebook page, saying: “Check out this soulful rendition of ‘LGIO’. Very cool.”

Paul, lead singer of the band Soul Train and owner of the Elite School of Music in Blackburn Road, said he was honoured.

He said: “She said it took her by surprise and then she went and shared it.

“It is a huge endorsement for me and I was delighted.”

Paul, 32, said he had added Janis as a friend a while ago on the site.

He said: “I have a lot of friends on Facebook who are not friends in real life, they are more contacts.

“A bit ago I was looking through one of these contacts and I found Janis and cheekily added her, and Marvin’s sister.

“When she accepted my request I put a message on her wall to say thank you and that was that.

“I didn’t send her a link to the video or anything she must have just spotted it herself.”

Paul said on the back of the success he planned to record an improved version.

He said: “This was just a quick 10-minute recording and I can do it better.

“Because of this I am going to go back into the studio and record a proper cover of it.

“Marvin Gaye has been my idol for about 12 years now.

“When I started training to be a singing teacher and researching singers he was one that stood out.

“He was one of the ones that turned me to soul music, which led to Soul Train.”
