A CHILDMINDER has been slammed by Ofsted following an inspection.

Karen Anne Pinckard, of Darwen, was rated ‘inadequate’ after an inspection in February, the results of which have now been published.

In her report, inspector Linda Shore identified a number of failings by the Blackburn Road childminder.

She said: “The childminder is in breach of several requirements. These include reviewing risk assessments and obtaining written permission for outings.

“The childminder does not have a robust understanding of safeguarding issues, including an up-to-date knowledge of child protection procedures including the use of mobile phones and cameras in her home.

“She childminder has failed to renew her first aid certificate or obtain insurance.

“She does not record children’s attendance. This does not support children's good health or wellbeing and these are also breaches of legal requirements.”

The inspection also said Ms Pinckard failed to notify Ofsted of a change of address within the required 14 days.

It continued: “The childminder does not have adequate resources, use observations and assessments, or understand how to plan challenging learning experiences. The childminder does not provide parents with details of how she delivers the Early Years’ Foundation Stage, contact details for Ofsted, or a procedure to follow if they wish to complain.”

According to the report, Ms Pinckard has four children on her roll. None were present during the inspection.

She receives support from Blackburn with Darwen Council.

Ms Pinckard declined to comment.

No wonder there were no children there! She wouldn't have time to look after them and conform to all those regulations.

Lets hear what the parents of the kids that she looked after think about how she did her job. Yes, she obviously did not cross all her T's or dot all her I's, but were the kids taken good care of, or not? Were the parents of the kids happy, or not? More info please.

I'm no expert, so please forgive me but don't they have to do a course and be inspected before they become a childminder, then they are subjected to yearly reviews like this one from Ofsted. Let down by the system or just lazy ?

Parents are tempted to use the unregulated uninsured ones due to being cheaper - they are risking there children's welfare! Parents need to be savvy and check their provider of care has insurance to practice and adequate business insurance for travel too.

There are too many unofficial and unregulated providers in Darwen - well done to the Telegraph for highlighting this case.... she could have carried on regardless?

Unfortunately there are too many good childminders being priced out by these cowboys, and there is too much focus on the nursery style of care that scares too many childminders and causes too much paperwork. You choose a childminder for the home environment and loving care not an early education!
