Darwen pub to get £300k refurbishment

A DARWEN town centre pub is set for a £300,000 refurbishment later this year.

The Bridgewater, in Church Street, was recently taken over by a new firm after owners the Bramwell Pub Company went into administration.

And the Stonegate Pub Company, which owns well known brands such as Yates’s and Slug and Lettuce, wants to give the pub a new lease of life.

Manager Adam Hulme said the firm had big plans and it was exciting times for the town centre venue.

He said: “There has been £30,000 put aside to renovate the front of the building, which is desperately needed as it has never been done since we opened.

“Then there will be a further £270,000 spent giving the inside of the pub a complete makeover.”

Mr Hulme added that although he hoped the refurbishments would start soon, he was unable to confirm a precise date.

He said: “Stonegate has some great plans for this year and we will continue to do everything we do.

“We will keep supporting local events and local charities and all the quiz nights and events will carry on as normal.”

Mr Hulme was manager at The Bridgewater when it opened in September 2006, then under the Barracuda pubs group.

Barracuda was taken over a couple of years ago by Bramwell, which went into administration in November last year, casting the future of its 185 pubs into doubt.

But later that month it was confirmed The Bridgewater was one of 78 of Bramwell’s pubs to be taken over by Stonegate.

With the arrival of pubs giant JD Wetherspoon in Darwen, Mr Hulme said he was delighted with the added competition.

He said: “I have been waiting for this for two years now and I am delighted.

“It is great to see Wetherspoon’s here and it shows just how strong the town is.

“All it is going to do is bring more people into the town and we can start to create that famous Darwen circuit again.

“The competition is healthy and other town centre pubs are going to benefit.”

Trying to compete with "The Old Chapel"? From what I've seen of both of them, I don't give it much chance.

All we need now is for Thwaites to do the Millstone up. Fat chance of that.

I think you will find its the complete opposite, Darwen has seen a significant rise in its nightlife over the last few years and with the addition of TOC then it will continue to get better and better.

Well , why Darren1951 has been voted down is another mystery .

Let us look at facts . Opinions welcomed as always .

The Millstones - rip it's heart out and make it a Tesco Express .

No , I'm serious - The Millstones is a horrible , horrible pub .

The Bridgewater - loathesome place . Spit and sawdust springs to mind .

But they were once really nice places . No longer sadly .

Just hope that TOC doesn't end up the same .

Nightlife . To my certain knowledge people come from many miles around to enjoy a far superior experience than is offered in Blackburn .

Get more if they could work out the one-way-system and park . True .

Now , permit me to bounce around a bit .

Bridge Street - should be filled with shops as being the link between Sainsury's and the town centre .

It isn't - only one place worth a visit - the Fish and Chip shop .
That is tasty food by the way .

Wonder how long the second hand DVD shop will last ?
And the Model Shop who sells nothing worth buying .

Why are there no shoe shops in Darwen ?
No sports shops , no book shops , no toy shops etc .

Apart from Boots where are the "Big Names" ?

No , don't mention the worst "ASDA" I have ever entered , once was enough .

And as the wife complains , where can she buy decent clothes ?
As usual Preston here we go .

I note The George is being changed to a taxi office and two shops .
What bets on takeaways ?

How sad .

True - apologies to Buxtons , their meat and potato pies are
scrumptious !!

One of my favourite "meals" is to buy one and a roll .
Cut the roll in half and scoop out the insides .
Smother whats left with butter , place the entire pie inside .
Lots of tomato sauce , eat as a sandwich .

See what you've done ?

Made me feel hungry !!

Right that's Thursday's lunch organised .
Something to look forward to .

Can't go tomorrow (Wednesday) as it's
"double-bin-day" .

Have to spend the day riding shotgun on our bins as
the lowlifes in the joint alley will either fill my recycling bin
with filth , and then it won't be emptied , or will steal either or both
bins after they've been emptied - still it's a good communty spirit
as all my neighbours are protecting their own bins for exactly
the same reason !!

FotM - been there, done that! We now have gate where I live; there seems to be much less rubbish just "dumped" nowadays, Not a great fan of tomato sauce, I'm afraid. Your description of the sandwich sounds like Marlon's inch thick variety, from the "Perishers" carton in the Daily Mirror years ago!
