A commuter challenge to find the fastest way to travel around Enfield resulted in cycling coming up tops.

People walked, drove, cycled and took the bus in the two-mile route from John Wilkes House in Ponders End to Enfield Civic Centre in Enfield Town to find which was fastest at 8.30am, when commuter traffic is heavy.

The first bike made it past the finish line on April 25 in eight minutes and 45 seconds, and the second bike in 13 minutes and 32 seconds.

A car came in next at 18 minutes and 40 seconds, the pedestrian took 28 minutes, and the bus passenger trailed behind at 42 minutes.

Councillor Chris Bond, cabinet member for environment, said: “There are many ways to get around the borough, but looking at the cost of transport, speed and what is most enjoyable it is very clear that cycling comes out tops.

“Enfield Council is doing everything it can to not only improve the cycle network by developing a network of Greenway routes, but also offering free cycle training to adults and young people."
