AM Elin Jones has sought assurances from the Welsh Government that it will provide financial backing to re-build part of the National Library in Aberystwyth damaged by fire last week.

The Ceredigion AM tabled an emergency question in the Senedd in the wake of Friday’s blaze in Building Two at the National Library.

She said: "Damage which could run into millions of pounds has been caused to the National Library. Can you give the Assembly an assurance today that as a Government you will provide financial backing to the National Library as they face the cost of rebuilding that part of the building?"

Elin Jones AM also praised firefighters who tackled the blaze and staff who worked at the weekend to ensure the National Library could reopen.

Heritage Minister John Griffiths said that the library was a national institution and he would have discussions with the library about how to deal with the aftermath of the fire and take the library forward.

He added: "It is premature at this stage to say much in terms of detail about that cost and that support because a lot of work is still taking place and a lot of information is yet to be compiled."
