Rubbish dumped in Darwen sparks outrage

A MOUNTAIN of rubbish has been dumped in front of a garage in Darwen.

A variety of items have been fly-tipped, including household waste, pieces of wood and cardboard containers, outside the disused garage behind Blackburn Road, close to Relish Sandwich Shop.

Furious councillors slammed the fly-tipping and appealed for anyone with information on who was responsible to come forward.

Earcroft councillor Stephanie Brookfield said: “There are loads of bags of unknown waste dumped there. It is terrible.

“The land it is on is council land and we are hoping to get it gated, but of course money is tight.

“We need to find out who is responsible for dumping all the rubbish.”

Fellow Earcroft councillor and town council deputy chairman Trevor Maxfield said: “It is an absolute disgrace.

“We have been trying to get that site sorted out for the past two years to my knowledge.

“The council will clean it up but we are looking to get it gated first.

“Every time it gets cleaned up it just gets dumped on again.

“It is businesses dumping building materials which is just outrageous.Somebody knows who is doing this and must let us know so the appropriate action can be taken.”

A council spokeswoman confirmed that the local authority was arranging for gates to be installed on the access road in the coming weeks.

The latest incident of fly-tipping in the town comes as Blackburn with Darwen Council is in the middle of a large-scale crackdown on rubbish dumping in the borough.

As part of its campaign, thousands of pounds in fines have been handed out to people found guilty of fly-tipping, and they have also been ‘named and shamed’ in the Lancashire Telegraph.
