Blackburn Rovers left with no sponsors as WEC deal ends

Blackburn Citizen: BLANK The WEC sign has been removed from the Darwen End leaving just a trace. BLANK The WEC sign has been removed from the Darwen End leaving just a trace.

METAL fabrication firm WEC’s sponsorship of a stand at Ewood Park has ended leaving Blackburn Rovers without a commercial sponsor.

The company and the football club confirmed that the rolling one-year deal had finished as the name boards came down from the Darwen End of the ground.

Rovers bosses said they were in talks with a number of possible sponsors for both the shirt and stand.

Blackburn MP and Rovers fan Jack Straw said he was hopeful that the team’s successful start to their first season in the Championship after relegation from the Premier League might bring them some high-profile sponsorship.

WEC director Wayne Wild, chief executive of the Blackburn Rovers Supporters Investment Trust which is seeking to buy a stake in the club, said: “It was a one-year rolling agreement. That agreement has now come to an end.”

The failure of the Darwen firm and club to agree a new deal after four years comes after the end of a one year free sponsorship of the Rovers shirts by The Prince’s Trust.

Rovers operations director Paul Agnew said: “WEC and the club have been unable to agree a further one-year deal for the Darwen End. We currently have no stand sponsorship or sponsors for the shirts after the agreement to allow the Prince’s Trust to be on them for a one-year period.

“We are currently in talks with a number of potential shirt and stand sponsors but have yet to reach any agreements.

“That does not mean we will not do so in the near future.

“We need to maintain the value of the brand particularly regarding shirt sponsorship.”

Mr Straw said: “I think it is unfortunate that Rovers have no sponsorship at the moment.

“Obviously it would be good if the club got new financial support for Rovers, but it is their first year back in the Championship.”

Glen Mullan, chairman of the BRFC Action Group, said: “I am disappointed that WEC has ended its sponsorship of the club at a time when supporters are staying away.

“The club needs sponsors to come forward to get revenue at a time when fans are not buying tickets.”

Bit much of Mr Mullan to expect the sponsors to keep putting their money into Rovers when a lot of their fans aren't doing the same, smacks a little of double standards - maybe the sponsors do not want to invest for the same reason as the supporters, i.e. lack of trust in Venky's, just a thought

Reg Rover says...

THE AMAZING DECLINE OF BLACKBURN ROVERS F.C.
Even I gasped in amazement when I saw the Ewood Park attendance v/s HULL CITY, 13,562 spectators for Rovers opening home game of the season. I will say that again 13,562- the lowest attendance at Ewood Park for a league fixture for almost 20 years, since August 1993.
I had predicted on this website that if Rovers persisted in employing Steve Kean, their gates in the championship will plummet to around the 12,000 mark. But even I did not expect it to happen so soon. To compound matters the Saturday attendance v/s Leicester was no better.
Reports from within Ewood say that Balaji and Ventakatesh Rao making a rare visit ‘THEIR CLUB’ were shocked at the lack of fans v Hull City. WELL WHAT DID THEY EXPECT?
You can only ignore football fans for so long; you can only treat them with contempt for so long. You can only go against all their wishes for so long.
Eventually they will come Back BITE YOU. And bite the Rao family they have.
Whilst Mrs Anurandha ( I like to be entertained ) Desai insists on keeping Kean in employ the fans have said enough is enough and half of Rovers regular support have left the club, never to return whilst Kean is manager. No matter what results Kean now achieves, and I am not holding my breath on that outcome being fruitful despite a promising start to the season.
Since the Venky group took control in November 2010, they have now halved the support to the club that Rovers had under the Allardyce and Williams regime. Rovers were enjoying average gates of just under 26,000. And at the start of Allardyce’s last season in charge 2010 – 2011 sold in the region of 18,000 season tickets. Followed by the sale of 14,000 season tickets the following season with Kean in charge, which as predicted by all and sundry led to relegation.
In a patronising interview on Sky TV on the afternoon of the Hull game, operation director Paul Agnew appeared to tell the world that season ticket sales are not as bad as been reported and corporate sponsorship is still good. He went on to say “mistakes last season have been recognised and acknowledged”
This interview preceded the Hull City game last Wednesday. Agnew must have been squirming in his seat as the fans failed to show.
Next day following the damaging attendance and the fury of Ventkatesh and Balaji Rao, a statement leaked from Ewood said that season ticket sales are around 7,000.
NO they are not, my sources tell me they are way under that. And as for the patronising out of touch Agnew interview that “mistakes have been acknowledged” when was that? I have not heard of any acknowledgement to mistakes made or apologies offered by the Rovers hierarchy.
I certainly have not heard Kean acknowledge any mistakes or offer any apologies for being relegated and certainly no statements of regret from the Rao family.
Ventkatesh Rao did however appear on Sky TV in a supposed ‘exclusive’ back in late May, all that amounted to was a pathetic, tearful interview in which he said “ we are not bad people and we wil get things right”. SORRY Ventkatesh, you are bad people, very bad people, you have ruined my football club and as for getting ‘things right’ PIGS MIGHT FLY.
Back to Mr Paul (Kean has me in his back pocket) Agnew. Do not insult our intelligence by waffling on about how rosy things are, they are not. You haven’t even got a shirts sponsor for Christ’s sake. What have you been doing all summer?
The whole future of the club is in doubt. Financially, once the parachute payments have run out, you are about to crumble.
Without fans you have no club. The whole club is in trouble.
Did you not for a moment foresee what was going to happen?
It’s ok Mr Agnew being dismissive of Shebby Shingh’s remarks re-the manager.
Singh has a valid point only he did not express it very well. And the point that Singh was probably trying to make is that whilst Kean is still at the club, they will be no coming back together of the club and the fans. NO matter what the results are good or bad. NO matter what players are signed. NO matter what statements of reassurance you make. NO matter what the Rao family do or say.
The problem at Blackburn Rovers is obvious to all and simple to solve. Steve (£1.3 million per annum) Kean has to go. Then and only then can you Mr Agnew even think of rebuilding the club and renewing a bond and relationship with the fans. Does nobody at Ewood realise just how disliked Kean is. For ‘pity’s sake’ wake up before it is too late.
Reg.
Footnote:
If I had an employee in my business that had lost me half my customer bases in 18 months, guess what I would do? Like any business man, I would have to let him go, simple as that. Why is Kean still at Ewood? The mystery deepens.

Strange for Mullan to complain when it was him who started organising the protests. Now he wants WEC to contribute to this circus? Save your money Mr Wild. For all their business savvy, Venkys don't seem to be able to figure out what is obvious to the rest of the world - the club is a shambles, and nobody wants to be associated with it in its current state. Get rid of Kean and bring in a proper Chairman to run the club properly. Williams was a diamond, and you would double the value of your investment if you brought him back tomorrow and gave him full control.

Yet another sign of discontentment at the shambles that is becoming Blackburn Rovers under Venkys. Crowds staying away and now no commercial sponsers. No matter what the reasoning, commercial entities cannot be associated with what is happening at Ewood, what does it say about them? Associate with and sponser a chaotic regime, what does that say about your business to your customers and the service they can expect to receive? Venkys first priority is to start restoring confidence in the Ewood operation and the first step is to replace Kean. Confidence in his abilities as s manager rate around zero or slightly lower. Rovers under proper direction offer an excellent sponsorship opportunity. 3 year deal at championship sponsorship rates with the potential of two of those years in the premiership makes excellent business sense. But Kean heads chaos so Venkys, start now Kean out now.

What I don't understand is why tear all the signs down at such high speed, surely the best advertisement would have been to leave them up. Tell the next sponsor this is the treatment you will get. At the moment it looks a mess and the blank boards everywhere hardly encourage companies to offer big money. Along with the empty seats and lack of sponsors on the shirts (aren't we allowed two in the Championship) its pretty obvious that Kean and maybe even Venky's have to go, or the club will lose more and more money.

EDMY - excellent post in every respect!!
Who in their right mind would want to associate their name with the idiotic Owners/Manager at Ewood Park - can fully understand WEC not wanting to renew their sponsorship throwing more good money at the wasters without any possibility of a return on their investment especially also with their stance in respect of the current Ownership of the Club.
So no Sponsors, no 'real' investment in structure/players just lots of freebies (with no doubt some underhand activity) with no experience of the Premiership let alone the Championship!!!
Kean s big mouth on the loose with quotes of strength in depth and can fight on a number of fronts this season - yet fall at the first hurdle last night with a woeful display!!!
And as for Mullen not sure who he is supporting anymore other than becoming a spokesman for the Venkys - was he really the instigator of the protest marches against the Manager/Owners?

What i don't get is this invasion of Portuguese players who are third rate. The always mention Sporting Lisbon, Braga etc but the truth is with the exception of Nuno Gomes the others hardly played for these clubs, but instead 2nd division teams or loaned out. If they were quality players then 1. They would be playing 1st team football for the top sides and 2. They wouldn't want to come to Blackburn. Maybe Steve Kean is making comission on all these players. I know the Portuguese economy is in trouble but not as much as Blackburn Rovers.

Steve Kean has clearly influenced this outcome via his stooge Paul Agnew. WW's outspoken comments via BRSIT and other channels, whilst only trying to help, has meant he doesnt want challeging, especially from a sponsor.

He ousted Paul Hunt and all the previous other Directors for exactly the same thing. So the manager has influence over the owners, the directors and the elusive MD, Derek Shaw. ps unheard of since his appointment ??

All these thing were predicted over a year ago by the LT.

He went on to say “mistakes last season have been recognised and acknowledged” This interview preceded the Hull City game last Wednesday. Reg. Footnote: If I had an employee in my business that had lost me half my customer bases in 18 months, guess what I would do? Like any business man, I would have to let him go, simple as that. Why is Kean still at Ewood? The mystery deepens. www.regoftherovers.c o.uk[/p]
This letter deserves to be posted on every available fly-post site in Blackburn. A copy should be sent to all newspapers and the letter's originator congratulated by every BRFC fan. Well 'said' that man![/p]
To true.... baz58

Sounds like the squad is just as happy as the fans then - Quality finisher and no doubt in my mind he can deliver 20+ goals in the championship. Instead he is just likely to get a fine....

For goodness sake, play a 4-4-2 please Kean.

There is a huge difference between being a good manager and a good coach. Despite Kean's failings as a manager he is (despite what we think) a good coach however, its pretty clear that he cannot cut it as a manager. His tactics are nothing short of inept. One only has to look at Brian Kidd who without doubt is a super coach but looked what happened when we appointed him as manager.
I could sympathise with Kean if he came out at the end of the 10/11 season and admitted he was out of his depth but he continues with this aura that he is untouchable. Even in the past I sympathised with Kidd and in some respect Ince because I trusted them as a person. However, despite trying I can't trust Kean no matter how hard i have tried.

I think its pretty clear that there is a hidden agenda at Ewood. No matter how cluless Rao & Desai are about football they are not clueless about business & in my opinion there is a defining reason why Mr Kean is still associated with Rovers.

Despite our reasonable start to the season I am extremely worried about the future of my club. We have been extremley lucky to get 7 points so far but I firmly expect us to get found out on Saturday against Leeds (who I add are being run by an exceptional manager). I do not expect promotion this year & I am firmly confident that even reaching the play offs will not be acheived.

I just wish in this country the relevant associations/authori
ties would step in for 'non premier league' clubs when they are faced with predicaments like this. This would surely stop cases like Leeds (a few years ago) & Portsmouth.
It breaks my heart BRFC

When has Glen urged supporters to withhold their financial support of the club? I can't recall him doing so. Just because he's a protester, doesn't mean that he's a boycotter. They are totally different.

I have chosen to boycott, because I refuse to give my money to such a shambolic organisation, whom I firmly believe, are here to financially strip this once proud club, to the bare bones. I am not a kean fan and want to see and end to his tenour as much as everyone, however on this point i am not aware anyone is able to stop anyone bringing a banner into Blackburn, if what you really mean is ewood, then unfortunatley being the owner of the buisness does give them the right to choose who they allow in , just like the landlord of the local pub can say sorry son your not coming in.

Your focus on them being indian and fighting in the war seems a bit strange, just as a minor point over 87,000 indian soliders died in the second world war and 1,500000 civilian casualties and with an army of 205,000 at the start of the war became the largets volunter force in history reaching over 2.5 million, my history book stell me that the allies fought against the Germans and the Japanese and we were not just fighting for this country but the liberation of the whole world.

My point is lets not start hijacking legitimate football discussions with comments amid a stocking up racial divide. This is not about them being Indian this is about poor management

He though has not been taking money out of the club and player purchases have been very good in general. Another two big differences are that he is popular on and off the pitch and is honest with his players and fans.

I can't go to that many matches due to various reasons but went last night with the previous match I attended being home to Norwich at the end of last season.

Last night was probably the biggest show of sh*te I have seen Rovers put on for many many years. A big worry would have to be the apparent enormous drop in quality even from a more or less relegated side v Norwich compared to last night. Surely we should have strengthened over the summer. We have blatantly become a fair bit worse. It doesn't take rocket science to work out why we've had a big influx of Portuguese. It's got nothing to do with untapped market because all clubs across Europe are and have been aware of this potential and those that are any good have been signed. Though Fabio Nunes looked to have potential but the other two were appauling. If we wanted young potential what's wrong with the lads who got to the FA Youth Cup final last season?

Still no real investment and more transfer fees being pocketed the latest going to be Bunn £1M, Polish keeper lot less?

Had every intention of going to Leeds but I'm b*ggered if I'm paying £53 for me and the lad to watch that cr*p.

Kean Out, Venkys Out.

Surely if someone is Indian, and also a moron, this makes them an Indian moron, why try make a race issue out of that? I suppose i must be racist as i think Keanos a scottish moron.

"but how this has come about stinks".......... I'll bet my house Kean has something to do with it. He hasn't been sacked because, in my opinion, he is doing a very good job for Venkys, whatever that might be. Come to that if, and its a big if, Kean should get sacked who would be desperate enough to make a fool of himself working for this bunch. Exactly why no report on the match? probably because it was not worth reporting on, and still 7,000 people bought season tickets! unbelievable!
Still ending up like Portsmouth will render the club inexpensive and a takeover bid won't cost as much....every cloud.

Still no comments from the 7000. Surely they can see what a shambles the club now is. Why can't the fans stick together and boycott, if only for ONE GAME to try to get rid of this regime. What a message that would send out to Venkys and the footballing world.and might also give the powers that be a kick up the @rse to look into what is really happening at Blackburn Rovers.

listen i think we are getting confused here , I was not particularly bothered by the use of the word indian , what i had more issue with was the fact that the poster felt it necessary to talk about the fact that they are indian and he is Born and Bred here they have no right to stop him taking a banner in.

"Why are Indian owners allowed to dictate if where allowed to bring a banner into an area of Blackburn where we were BORN and BRED?"

this I believe is bring race into the argument

Surely if someone is Indian, and also a moron, this makes them an Indian moron, why try make a race issue out of that? I suppose i must be racist as i think Keanos a scottish moron.
Yes you are as it happens The point is that nationality does not need to be mentioned, I dont need to call you an English idiot. Even if it is true
No worries pal, guess im racist as charged! I was going to say that the new portuguese lads looked out of their depth, but i guess pointing out someones nationality could be classed as inflamatory!
listen i think we are getting confused here , I was not particularly bothered by the use of the word indian , what i had more issue with was the fact that the poster felt it necessary to talk about the fact that they are indian and he is Born and Bred here they have no right to stop him taking a banner in. "Why are Indian owners allowed to dictate if where allowed to bring a banner into an area of Blackburn where we were BORN and BRED?" this I believe is bring race into the argument

He went on to say “mistakes last season have been recognised and acknowledged” This interview preceded the Hull City game last Wednesday. Don't always agree with Reg's rantings but this is spot on. Even setting aside the fact there is no evidence whatsoever that Mr Kean has any actual ability to be a football manager, as an indirect result of said management we have lost:

- The revenue from the Premiership and all of the attendant publicity and fringe benefits that brings
- 50% of the paying customers
- All commercial sponsorship

....and to top it all the same individial got hammered and acting like a complete lush slandered a previous employee which has resulted in a lawsut against both him and his employers.

Where else on this earth could this happen and the individual still be employed............
......

I have always found the conspiracy theories difficult to believe but you do have to think of what possible reason can there be for Venky's (who are smart business people??) not to get rid of him.

I totally agree with you, get out venkys and kean you total t*ssers, you are so hated!
Have any of the 8000 any comments ?

"Why are Indian owners allowed to dictate if where allowed to bring a banner into an area of Blackburn where we were BORN and BRED?"

this I believe is bring race into the argument
Im not getting confused, you infer racism to my quote, you dont know me or my views, just one question please, with a yes or no answer.if a moron comes from Scotland, does this make him a Scottish moron?
No, it makes him a moron who happens to be Scottish.

The nationality is irrelevant to the fact that he's a moron.

I do laugh when I hear the old '...signed in 48 hours' comment. Its almost as funny as '... we have a competitve squad...' & ' ... we need to hit the ground running....'

To describe someone as a "Scottish moron" is not racist, at worst it would be xenophobic if you are saying the reason they are a moron is purely because they are Scottish. Would anyone disagree that Barack Obama is an "American President" or Sir Alex Ferguson is a Scottish football manager? No. I agree there may not be a need to add in the nationality but it is no way racist.

No sponsors will sponsor Rovers if no one is buying tickets.
We have been contacted repeatedly about buying advertising space for our small business but when we asked how many season tickets had been sold, they couldnt tell us. We declined on that basis and the fact that none of us have renewed our tickets so why would we pay advertising money?

It's happened in over 95% of matches since Kean has took over. Despite his pathetic record as a manager people should not forget that on actual performances it could be even worse. In matches where we have been dominated, and there are a hell of a lot of those, we have scraped the odd win or draw from the clutches of defeat somehow. The opening championship matches are evidence of his biggest streak of luck yet.

I fear that with Venky's as owners this will probably never get much better, but to dismiss Kean now and appoint a non-yes man would give a better manager the chance to stabilize the mess created and get some of the fans back to the matches.
Perhaps the players aren’t good enough (just like the manager) after all they’ve just been relegated plus, the new Kean recruits aren’t breaking any records. Admittedly a decent manager might get more out of the players but, let’s not forget who brought in the majority of them!

Thankyou Reg, however you are only stating what we all have known for a long time, no person in the history of football has been given more time to get the workings of a club run right than Richard Cranium Kean, and furked it up more than him, in any club that this had happened to, the manager would have been a long distant memory, however we are still having to tolerate his inept management skills week in and week out, So there must be something else at the bottom of this mystery?????????? but i will tell Kean and the rest of the other bandits who have systematically raped and pillaged our once great club, that at sometime in the future this will all be over and we will all know the truth for what it is,

No companies want to be associated with losers like the Venkey's and their henchman even Steptoe and Son would not advertise there.

A change is required Shebbt has not worked and we need an Englishman to take on his role someone who understands grass root football and also what makes the fans tick.

A new guy would assess the situation and probably be asked to judge the manager on merit this season so obviously he would need at least 2 more matches before he could justifiably sack Kean.

A new guy would assess the situation and probably be asked to judge the manager on merit this season so obviously he would need at least 2 more matches before he could justifiably sack Kean.

I can't blame them, why on earth would anyone with half a braincell want to sponsor us?
Owners who don't have a clue what they are doing.
A manager who is reviled by all true Rovers fans whether they are still going to Ewood or not.
Fans who rain hatred and bile from the stands.
Sponsors part with their money to gain advertising, to get their company and products out into the wider world, they want a positive return for their money.
Even Venky's aren't stupid enough to sponsor Rovers.
There is absolutely nothing positive about Blackburn Rovers at present and that will not even begin to change until Steve Kean is removed as manager.
Even then far too much damage has been done to our once great club.

I'm surprised that Kean has't managed to get Matus Rose to sponsor us after all his trips to Portugal!

Spot on post Reg...the problem is, there's NO-ONE at the club with the dinity, gravitas, skill, contacts or experience to negotiate wit any meaningful sponsor.

The solutions to our problems are simple.

1. Get rid of all the loonies running the asylum...Kean, Agnew, the PNE guy, Singh.

2. Bring back John Williams with unfettered control.

3. Get a proper sponsor

4. Appoint Di Canio as manager and give him control of football.

The team should be
Robbo
Lowe/Ribiero
Dann
Givet/ Hanley
Marcus Olsson/Givet
Murphy
Nzonzi
Martin Olsson
Formica
Kazim Richards
Gomes/Rochina

with a fluid 4-3-3 system

Would any of the 20,000 loyal Rovers fans disagree with that?

These have been the outstanding questions for some time now and the likely "wheeling & dealing" going on within the club is also in question.

I suggested we would end up with bargain buys (sell one get one free, re Bunn) PLUS there is no way the Venky,s are going to spend 5-10 million on a proven striker....PLUS with conman Kean on-board we are only going to be able to sign 30 plus pro,s desperately looking for a season or two contract....or last minutes "Morrison" 7.00 special,s....!!!!!! (made in Portugal, it seems...)

WHY do the Venky,s and conman Kean continue to say things they NEVER intend delivering to the club.

Lining their own pockets more likely !!

Yes, it is a very good point. Why are Venky's not sponsoring the shirt, after all the going rate is free of charge and it would spare the embarrassment of not having a sponsor. Is it because Venky's are already finding the public display of their failure and foolishness too embarrassing and want to avoid further public connection with the club?

I totally agree with you, get out venkys and kean you total t*ssers, you are so hated!
Have any of the 8000 any comments ?

Pedantic non-sense, a spade is a spade is a spade is a spade, bet you turn this round and ask why a spade, as you seem to see problems where they dont exsist. And just to re-cap,in your words,a moron who happens to be scottish cant be referred to as a scotish moron, just one more question please is Jordan Rhodes a scottish international or is he actually an international who happens to be scottish?

Your focus on them being indian and fighting in the war seems a bit strange, just as a minor point over 87,000 indian soliders died in the second world war and 1,500000 civilian casualties and with an army of 205,000 at the start of the war became the largets volunter force in history reaching over 2.5 million, my history book stell me that the allies fought against the Germans and the Japanese and we were not just fighting for this country but the liberation of the whole world. This is not about them being Indian this is about poor management[/p]
Surely if someone is Indian, and also a moron, this makes them an Indian moron, why try make a race issue out of that? I suppose i must be racist as i think Keanos a scottish moron.[/p]
Yes you are as it happens The point is that nationality does not need to be mentioned, I dont need to call you an English idiot. Even if it is true[/p]
No worries pal, guess im racist as charged! I was going to say that the new portuguese lads looked out of their depth, but i guess pointing out someones nationality could be classed as inflamatory![/p]
listen i think we are getting confused here , I was not particularly bothered by the use of the word indian , what i had more issue with was the fact that the poster felt it necessary to talk about the fact that they are indian and he is Born and Bred here they have no right to stop him taking a banner in. "Why are Indian owners allowed to dictate if where allowed to bring a banner into an area of Blackburn where we were BORN and BRED?" this I believe is bring race into the argument[/p]
Im not getting confused, you infer racism to my quote, you dont know me or my views, just one question please, with a yes or no answer.if a moron comes from Scotland, does this make him a Scottish moron?[/p]
No, it makes him a moron who happens to be Scottish.

Quite a good enlightening post, you mention the good start, well I an ex long standing season ticket holder did not renew this season but decided to see how things went. Well the good start, apart from the points it is the worst football display I have seen for years and years. Disorganised rubbish with no pattern or shape. Does Kean (no he doesn't because he cannot) not see before signing forwards he should go to the root of the problem which is midfield and defence. It is no good scoring 3/4 goals if you are leaking 4/5. For what I have seen so far the gates will drop even further, the supporters may forgive the Venky's if they get rid of Kean and the team start playing good attractive football and of course win.

I knew 'WEC' when it first started with just a handful of employees and look at the company now.

The 'boss' of WEC knows how to run a business, so no wonder the sponsorship has gone.

Perhaps the 'know it all's' at BRFC should approach WEC and ask them how to run a profitable business.

Bet they could do a damm sight better than those in control now.
