Somme remembered at Blackburn Cathedral

A SERVICE to mark the 93rd anniversary of the Battle of the Somme was held yesterday at Blackburn Cathedral.

Members of the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment, including the band, paid their respects to those who died during the battle, which started on July 1, 1916.

Out of 700 officers and soldiers from the regiment sent into battle on that day, only 237 survived. The East Lancashire Regiment suffered more casualties than on any other day in its history.

Among hymns sung yesterday were Praise My Soul, Gloria in Excelsis and Jerusalem.

The service closed with the national anthem.

The battle of the somme like many other battles were brought about by the wrongs of the so called human race. Those killed in battle do need remembering but it is a shame that it is always under the banner of the armed forces. It was a disorganised mess brought about by those who should have known better. But those poor individuals who had there lives taken away in the Battle of the Somme are just like the battles of today and do need remembering to hopefully make those in power realise the truth. War is a primitive behaviour and should not be undertaken without thought towards the outcome.
But have we learned those obvious lessons. No!

I hope they didnt get mistaken for the BNP with their union flags otherwise they would have been thrown out according to the cathedrals stance on what BNP members / voters look like .
