DODGING rocket attacks and land mines in Afghanistan would not be on most people’s list of things to do in their time off work.

But a council employee who made the switch from town hall to war zone and back said he would not have it any other way.

Tom Calver, who works in Blackburn with Darwen council’s press office, recently returned after two months in the war-torn country.

The 29-year-old RAF reserve officer was accompanying a film crew during who were following life on Kandahar Air Field in southern Afghanistan.

His role involved minding the Channel Five film crew, driving them around and helping them get the access they needed to shoot the series, which began this week.

And while Kandahar is a less dangerous region than the treacherous Helmand Province, Tom, of Duke's Brow, Blackburn, recalls at least 12 Taliban rocket attacks during his stay.

He said: “You get used to the rocket attacks, and you do drills to prepare. You hear a siren seconds before it hits and you have to throw yourself on the floor, get your body armour on and wait for the all-clear. The rockets they launched into the base were not massively accurate, but one landed about 400 yards from me and I could feel the building shake.

“It’s one of the most dangerous places on earth because there are hundreds of thousands of land mines, many of which date back to the war with the Russians. Just walking across a field isn’t an option.”

Reserve officers, who are the RAF's equivalent of the Territorial Army, can be called into action at any time.

As Tom settles back into the day job, where he fields press inquires about adult social care in Blackburn with Darwen, he can reflect on the contrast between his two workplaces - and he admits he was nervous when the call came to tell him he was being deployed.

He added: “It’s bizarre. They are two totally different worlds and going out there is very sobering.

“But it was a incredible experience, because it was the first time I had done anything like that, and I have met some fascinating people.”

The documentary, War Zone, continues on Monday at 9pm.

Frank Jr..... If it helps you feel better you can sleep safely knowing that it is your tax paying money that is being used to buy the weapons that are being used to shoot the taliban so that Afghanistan may one day become a state where people can live in peace.

Well done to channel 5 for going out there and covering a story of how OUR troops are spending or money.

Good luck lads and keep your heads down. :)

Last time i checked Frank

"Reserve officers, who are the RAF's equivalent of the Territorial Army"

He's a reservist and they pay him. So he's an employee of her majestys armed forces whilst he's their.

He does work for the council, they are not paying for him to go. The council will not be paying him whilst he is their. No council tax goes to the Army does it Frank?, wasnt on the last BWDC tax bill i paid.

General taxation, VAT, Income tax, National insurance pays for the armed forces.

and "CAN YOU LOT NOT READ"

yeah im pretty good at that thanks

you really did make a fool out of yourself frank. As a reservist this guy would have been paid by the RAF whilst out there and his salary stopped by the Council so to answer your question yes your income tax paid for him to go and support our forces but your council tax didn't pay a penny. Well done BwD Council for allowing it's employees to support their country in this way. I'm sorry to see the likes of Frank can't help himself but all of us would agree the one left looking like a plonker now is in fact frank. Lol

When reservists are called up, the armed forces pay for them.

Last time I checked Blackburn with Darwen don't have any armed forces so they won't have paid for this tour of duty.

Does Frank Jnr even pay council tax? I'm not sure there a company out there that would employ the prat so he's probably referring to his benefits that pay his council tax. Well done BwD for supporting staff to take part in serving in the forces.

One can only conclude from the number of posts you have made that a] you lead a sad and empty life b] you have a limited friend circle hence kerbcrawl around these pages c] are devoid of a brain between your ears, demonstrated by the quality and stupidity of your posts. Now, in terms of your holiday .... being the generous person i am .... you might as well get paid for it too ... so ... monday 12th Jan meet me at the army recruitment office in blackburn town centre at 3pm ... by which time i will have had time to discuss your special enrolment with them ... as i have connections in the army. Lets see if you have the balls to turn up ... somehow i dont think you will ... and do you think i am that stupid to hand over money to a plonker like you who has demonstrated the art of being a moronic twerp so aptly and easily ... which only you could have done. Any holiday moron would have been me buying the ticket (one way only)which i would hand over at the airport with all those who have posted on here to see you off!

Good Morning Frank Jr I have served as a regular soldier and on reserve and as such i am aware what is required of a reservist called up to active service, Yes reservists are volunteers and Yes they are paid by the National UK government not by their full time employers although a leave of absence from work is normally granted. There are arguments for more regular servicemen etc and money is a major factor in employing more men and women so for the time being we use volunteer reserves who are highly trained in very specialist roles ,please give them credit for their conviction and courage to defend ALL of us from adversity. This particular reserve Officer just happens to be a council employee and his role for the council was obviously why He was called up in this case. I am not a defender of local government by any means and in particularly B and D council as in the past few weeks i have been trying to get information from social services care department about a complaint, to no avail, but in this case to the individual WELL DONE

Hello Frank as a famous politician once said, DONT LET THE BUGGERS GRIND YOU DOWN, You have an opinion and the freedom to voice it, we all might not agree with you but good luck to you also for also having the courage to speak your mind. My service was not in vain and allows us to have this freedom, take care and dont be afraid to speak up for your views. Last year my son died in Iraq to uphold our freedom and this employee of the Council also put his life on the line for us

Unlike you super dick h**d, i have a life and intelligence which from the evidence of your posts you are devoid of. Read my previous post. Dickh**d ... you were given two choices. Knowing that you have no balls i knew you would make excuses for not meeting me at the army rec office. Tell you what ... to help you i can arrange for the meeting to be after work. Come on spineless gobshite name your day and time and i will get it sorted with the army office. The other option ... tell me the date and i will book the one way ticket for you and arrange for all the posters to see you off at the airport. Your stupidity and ability to be niave is beyond belief in thinkin that i would be daft enough to hand the cash over to you. Prat i would rather give that money to the army. Oh ... one last thing ... unlike you ... i have served in the army and lost a leg in doing my bit for our country ... so dickh**d ...who is spineless now? Me or you? If you have a spine and balls and are man enough, meet me at the army office. If you cant ... **** off and go back to YOUR dark and pervy life ... you moronic thick **** hole.

An ex squaddie, hiya and sorry to hear of the leg, I am not a peace keeper now and like you have have lost a lot for OUR country including my son and I have read all of the comments here and as I said in my last comment, what both you and I did in our service lives allowed Frank to voice his opinion, What else can I say or did we lose what we have in vain

I am sorry to hear about your loss ... indeed you and your family have truly served our country. Thank you also for your concern re: my loss of leg. I agree about freedom of speech but then unfortunately our Frank went off on one without first reading the story properly and understanding it and then when it was pointed out to him started to get fresh. You will note from his posts the delight he took in goading posters. There is no excuse for ignorance and then for that ignorance being used to justify baseless and factually incorrect opinions. Frank does have a thing for the council and its workers but this bias does not excuse him having cart blanche to make stupid and idiotic comments. I also have freinds who work in the council ... like us they are human beings and try their utmost best. If there is any group that needs the flak its the councillors not the workers.
