FIREFIGHTERS will be stepping up their efforts in the lead up to bonfire night to try and cut the number of nuisance fires started in streets.

Attention will be focused on the Griffin area of the town, which has previously seen youngsters deliberately lighting fires around Halloween and Bonfire Night.

As part of Operation Ember members of the fire brigade will join forces with the police and environmental health to patrol the streets on November 3, 4 and 5 to remove piles of rubbish being collected for unofficial bonfires.

A mobile fire station will also be situated on the corner of Coleridge Street and Stansfeld Street between 4pm - 9pm on tomorrow so that residents can go and voice their concerns.

Watch manager Phil Jones said: "The build-up to bonfire night is traditionally our most busiest time and in recent years this area has experienced a large number of nuisance fires.

"We will be patrolling the area in a bid to prevent them and will be removing waste material from the streets."
