Extra Blackburn hospital beds in bid to avert winter crisis

EXTRA hospital beds are set to be opened in a bid to avoid a repeat of last year’s winter chaos.

An additional 29 beds at the Royal Blackburn Hospital will be staffed permanently throughout the coming winter.

Extra nurses will also be employed on short-term contracts to care for the patients.

The move came after health bosses admitted that last year’s contingency procedures had not been up to scratch.

The hospital was hit hard by the severe outbreak of the norovirus winter vomiting bug last year.

Although bosses were not forced to close wards, dozens of operations were cancelled and patients complained of poor care from overworked staff.

And this year East Lancashire hospitals are already dealing with an unprecedented number of admissions, with 1,500 more patients per month than seen previously. An investigation is being carried out into what has caused this surge in demand.

Chief Executive Marie Burnham said the trust had already done exceptionally well to stay within the government’s target of 98 per cent of people waiting no longer than 18 weeks for treatment, despite the extra patient numbers.

She said the extra beds, along with additional ambulance cover, would mean that performance could be maintained with even more extra patients over the winter.

Last year, the trust had used staff on standby to come in and cover wards as pressure points. But this time, the beds will be open permanently, ready to take the pressure off any part of the hospital.

Miss Burnham said this, along with the new surgical triage unit set to open at Blackburn’s emergency department in December, would make a big difference.

Director of operations Val Bertenshaw said: “We have got to be able to respond quickly. We learned last winter that although we had escalation plans, it took longer to get people in place than we had anticipated, and we need to be able to do it instantly.

“If we don’t need the extra staff for emergency provision, they can be used to improve patient flow in planned care, which will ease any extra pressures throughout the hospital.”

When will the hospital authorities admit they were wrong to cut services at Burnley?

It's time they agreed to the Liberal Democrat's demands for A&E to return to BGH.

At last they have addmitted that something was "not up to scratch" a small step that although not on the road to "Damascus" yet is this a glimmer of hope!these plans were drawn up before Marie Burnham became the boss,so she is not to blame for the shambles she has inherited, all of the Meeting Patients Needs so let us give Marie time to reflect on the whole scheme and see if she has the courage to call a halt to this sorry mess and hold some sort of enquiry private or public.
before all this MPN started there were a series of local road shows when the trust spokespeople met with the public to inform them of the future East Lancs Health plans,I wrote to the Lancashire Evening Telegraph warning of the devastating effect they would have on your health provision, the turnout at those meetings was very poor,as was the response to the questionnaire sent out to every house in the district, I am sure that if a series of similar meetings were to be held now you would need a ticket to get in!
May I remind the people of Blackburn and Darwen who maybe think that "I'M ALL RIGHT JACK" we have got the A and E on our door step read carefully, in two years time all of womens health services will be transferred to Burnley General Hospital, well it will be, the female members of your family will have all gynaecological surgery at Burnley hospital including births,so Blackburn born will become a thing of the past, I bet that may have wiped the smile off some smug faces especially Rovers fans 99% of who's babies will then be Burnley B******S,and of course you must agree that proper fans should support the town of their birth! the only benefit of this could be the end of the purile childish comments by both sets of fans on the internet about their respective birthplaces.
Please make your friends aware of the whole situation happening now and facing you and your loved ones well-being in the future we are all in this together we are Lancastrians we may be lucky and do not need to access these services at the moment , one day we may need them as they were before .
